Drill bit sizes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Drill bits of the less routinely used sizes, such as 2.55 mm, would have to be ordered from a specialist drill bit supplier.
This is appropriate, because the tolerance of the diameter of drilled holes is closer for smaller drill bits.
Center drills are available with two different included angles; 60 degrees is the standard for drilling centre holes (for example for subsequent centre support in the lathe), but 90 degrees is also common and used when locating holes prior to drilling with twist drills.

Knowing your drill bits   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
To drill a satisfactory hole in any material, the correct type of drill bit must be used; it must be used correctly and be sharpened as appropriate.
Good quality drill bits can be expensive, so take care of them, keep them in a case or box if possible, rather than allowing them to roll around loose in a toolbox where the cutting edges may be damaged.
These bits are used to drill fairly large holes and they give a flat bottomed hole (with a central point) so are ideal where the head of a screw/bolt needs to be recessed into the timber - always use this bit before drilling the clearance hole for the bolt.

One of the more annoying things about living in a non-metric country is that small drill bits are not given sizes in any human dimension.
Instead, size numbers are used instead (here, as with wire "gauges," bigger numbers equate to smaller bits).

 Diamond Drill Bits
Core drill bits have a hollow center and cut a circle in the material to create a hole.
This results in a hole the size of the drill and a smaller "plug" or "core" which comes from the center.
However, since Blunt Nose bits drill out the complete hole, they also drill more slowly than the Core bits and they are generally not used on the super hard abrasive materials such as ceramic or porcelain tile, floor tile, limestone, slate, marble, granite or other stones.
