Drill string shock absorber - Patent 3963228
In rotary drilling, it is typical to employ a multi-cone bit at the lower end of a drill collar string which is suspended from the lower end of a drill pipe extending upwardly to the surface.
Drilling fluid or "mud" is pumped down the drill string and out of orifices in the bit and returns to the surface via the well annulus to cool the bit, clean the borehole bottom and to carry cuttings to the surface.
A drilling fluid is pumped down the drill string and passes into the bottom of the borehole through orifices in the bit 11, and circulates back to the surface via the annulus between the drill string and the borehole wall.

Shear sub for drill string - Patent 4064953
On lifting and rotating the drill string, the mandrel moves upwardly relative to the housing whereupon the lugs interlock with the splines to allow rotation of the drill bit as it is lifted off bottom.
Drilling mud is circulated down the central passage through the drill collars, mandrel and couplings to the drill bit and the drill string rotated in the conventional manner.
If a directional hole is to be drilled, the principal resistance to rotation of the drill string may be at a midpoint, for example near or at a whipstock, and the shear sub may then be most advantageously connected in the drill string at a midpoint.

Method for optimizing the tripping velocity of a drill string - Patent 4566318
The operation of pulling out or running in the drill string thus occurs in a plurality of pulls or runs wherein the pipe is accelerated from a stationery position to a pulling or running speed and then decelerated to another stationery position, generally in 60-90 foot intervals.
A drilling fluid, commonly known as drilling mud, is continuously circulated down the drill string and up the annulus formed by the drill string and the borehole in order to maintain sufficient pressure in the borehole to impede the entrance of formation fluids into the borehole in order to prevent a well "blowout".
Additionally, the velocity of the drill string in a plurality of corresponding intervals in the borehole is determined during the tripping operation.

Drilling sites will be kept a distance to be determined by field study away from major water ways and away from the more sensitive coast in order to prevent possible significant platform spills from devastating the aquatic ecosystem.
As the drill goes further into the ground, drill collars are added to the drill string in order to give the drill bit the right amount of pressure drilling into the formation.
The drilling fluid will constantly be moving down the drill string and then up the sides of the hole, cooling and cleaning the bit and lifting the cuttings to the surface where they can be collected.

 Utility Construction Methods Selection Guide
The rotating and steerable hollow drill is launched from the surface or shallow excavation at an angle of 8-15° and is used to drill a pilot hole to the exit or endpoint of the bore with an advance rate of about 2 feet per minute.
Water, a drilling fluid, or drilling mud is used for lubricating the drilling head and the hole.
The pilot string is removed and the bore is enlarged by a rotating barrel reamer attached to and pulled back by the washover pipe, drilling mud being used to flush away the cuttings and to support the reamed hole.

Drilling fluid is pumped through the drill string and face of the drill bit and backup the annulus to the surface.
Drilling fluid is circulated in rotary drilling to cool, clean, and lubricate the drill string, to flush cuttings from the hole, and to stabilize the borehole wall.
Some disadvantages to air rotary drilling are that air cannot support the wall of a hole in an unstable formation, changes in the return air flow are not as readily apparent as in mud flow, and air is not as effective in cooling and lubricating the drill bit and string.

 J. D. Hair & Associates, Inc.: HDD Process Description
The components of a horizontal drilling rig used for pipeline construction are similar to those of an oil well drilling rig with the major exception being that a horizontal drilling rig is equipped with an inclined ramp as opposed to a vertical mast.
Drill pipe and downhole tools are generally interchangeable and drilling fluid is used throughout the operation to transport drilled spoil, reduce friction, stabilize the hole, etc. Because of these similarities, the process is generally referred to as drilling as opposed to boring.
For a prereaming pass, reamers attached to the drill string at the exit point are rotated and drawn to the drilling rig thus enlarging the pilot hole.

In this method, a wellbore is drilled with as little deviance as possible directly towards the reservoir; once it penetrates and goes through the reservoir, the well is stopped and the drill string removed.
They’re made for rougher drilling conditions and less expensive; they aren’t ideal for small holes, but they are very sensitive to the porosity of the rock they are drilling through (drilling faster or slower depending on the pore pressure) giving the drilling crew a good idea of changes in pressure in the wellbore.
Drilling fluid is forced down the drill string and is expelled out the jets, lubricating and cooling the drill bit while at the same time carrying the rock cuttings away from the bit, exposing fresh formation to be drilled.

Additionally, due to the nature of riserless drilling and the remote operations of the program, the CDC report recommends that there be sufficient capacity for bulk mud storage and storage facilities for 1500 m of casing.
Finally, the CDC report requested a combined drill string length of approximately 11,000 m and that the drill pipe have a minimum interior diameter of 4.125 inches to ensure passage of all sampling, coring, and wireline logging tools.
To maintain the integrity of the drill string, which is subjected to a high degree of vessel motion inherent in the riserless drilling program, all drillpipe is to be handled at all times utilizing a dual elevator arrangement.

Drilling fluid, better known as drilling mud, is circulated through the kelly and the drill string by means of pipes and flexible hose connecting the drilling fluid or mud pumps and a swivel device attached to the upper end of the kelly.
Usually, the only interruptions to drilling operations will be to remove the drill string from the well bore for the replacement of the drill bit, a procedure known as tripping, and for the testing of formations for possible occurrences of oil or gas, known as drill-stem testing.
The drill string is removed from the well bore to allow the insertion of logging tools, which are lowered all the way to the bottom of the hole by means of a special cable.

 Drill Pipe Testing Services
It has been reported where a leak in a drill string created cement returns to the surface while cement was still being mixed, resulting in abandonment of the primary cement job, requiring numerous squeeze jobs to achieve an adequate cementation of the liner.
During the drilling process, washouts due to leaks can cause problems with parting of the drill string, drilling inefficiencies due to higher pump pressures to achieve necessary downhole flow rates of drilling fluids and premature tripping of drill pipe to correct a leak.
This is a direct application for external testing of the drill string or tubing connections since an external pressure differential is existent prior to and possibly even after perforating.

 DRILLING AND DRILL RIGS
Today's rotary drill rig consists of multiple engines (gas, diesel) that supply power, hoisting equipment that raises and lowers the drill string (drill pipe), and rotating equipment that turns the drill string and the drill bit at the bottom of the hole.
The rotating cones (Remember: the entire drill stem rotates in the hole and the drill bit is attached to the end of the drill stem) are the cutting heads.
The fluid then flows out the center of the drill bit and is forced back up the outside of the drill pipe onto the surface of the ground where it is cleaned of debris and pumped back down the hole.

If a drill string component is operating at very high stress levels in a hostile environment, no amount of inspection may suffice to eliminate the possibility of a failure.
Drill stem failure mechanisms must be divided into two distinct groups because two different approaches are required to combat them.
Since the drill string must often be operated at stresses above the threshold stress for Group 2 mechanisms, we cannot design the drill string to eliminate all possibility of failure.

Drilling with the HQ string was terminated at 700.04mbsf on Saturday 2nd of December, after it became locked in the hole at the end of a coring run.
Subsequent flushing of the hole resulted in a return of drill fluid, indicating a seal around the HQ casing was occurring, and the decision was made to progress coring with the NQ string.
