Drilling for natural gas offshore, in some instances hundreds of miles away from the nearest landmass, poses a number of different challenges over drilling onshore.
Drilling offshore dates back as early as 1869, when one of the first patents was granted to T.F. Rowland for his offshore drilling rig design.
The drilling template, secured to the sea floor and attached to the drilling platform above with cables, allows for accurate drilling to take place, but allows for the movement of the platform above, which will inevitably be affected by shifting wind and water currents.

Ocean Confidence -- Elevator World May 2001
The Ocean Confidence is one of five of the largest semi-submersible offshore drilling rigs in the world and is capable of drilling up to 30,000 feet in a maximum water depth of 7,500 feet.
The tower and guide rail are vertical for the initial 108 feet and then angle inward for the remaining 80 feet, while the car maintains its upright position as it travels up the inclined tower.
Tower sections are constructed of structural steel with the vertical members providing a flat-bearing surface on which the car may travel.

My tower is powdercoated so I don't want to chip it to badly also I am a bit nervous drilling the top deck as well for fishing the wire into the boat.
Drill the gelcoat in reverse, tape around all holes in both the tower and boat, might not want to use a center punch on the tower.
A simple trick for fishing wires through the tower is to use some Kite string and a shopvac, suck the string through the tower with the shopvac then tie the string to the wire and pull through.

Drilling rig - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Auger drilling is done with a helical screw which is driven into the ground with rotation; the earth is lifted up the borehole by the blade of the screw.
This method of drilling is used to drill the weathered regolith, as the drill rig and steel or tungsten blades cannot penetrate fresh rock.
RAB drilling is used primarily for mineral exploration, water bore drilling and blast-hole drilling in mines, as well as for other applications such as engineering, etc. RAB produces lower quality samples because the cuttings are blown up the outside of the rods and can be contaminated from contact with other rocks.
