The idea is that privately-owned cars would be built with the ability to dock themselves onto a public monorail system, where they become part of a centrally managed, fully computerized transport system—more akin to a driverless train system (as already found in airports) than to a driverless car.
As nearly all car crashes (particularly fatal ones) are caused by human driver error, driverless cars would effectively eliminate nearly all hazards associated with driving as well as driver fatalities and injuries (travelling by car is currently one of the most deadly forms of transportation, with over a million deaths annually worldwide).
A driverless car would also be a boon to economic efficiency, as cars can be made lighter and more space efficient with the absence of safety technologies rendered redundant with computerized driving.

 Cars - Driverless car
The driverless car is an emerging family of technologies, ultimately aimed at a full "taxi-like" experience for car users.
Driverless passenger programs include the FROG passenger vehicles from Holland, the ARGO research project from Italy, and the DARPA Grand Challenge from the USA.
The social challenge is in getting average drivers to trust the car, getting legislators to permit the car onto the public roads, and untangling the legal issues of liability for any mishaps with no person in charge.

 Volkswagen's driverless car - 4Car Feature - from Channel 4
Although the global auto industry has been experimenting with the slow-moving driverless car for decades, it has been generally regarded as little more than an amusing gimmick that could never be widely used on public roads.
However, VW's high-speed, fully-automatic, uncrashable (allegedly) race car is strictly for circuits - and even in its current early state of development it has been able to propel itself around tracks faster and more consistently than skilled drivers.
Engineers have chosen a comparatively modest Volkswagen Group car - a 160mph, 200bhp Golf GTI - as their testbed model, but 200mph-plus Audis, Lamborghinis, Bentleys and Bugattis from the same VW family could be fitted with so called self-driving technology in future.

Pentagon awards $2mn for driverless car -- Middle East Times
A driverless car that won a $2-million Pentagon prize in a landmark robotic race could change the face of human transportation forever, its developers said on Monday.
The car, christened "Stanley", was one of five unmanned and self-controlled vehicles to cross the finish line in the 210.5-kilometer (131.6-mile) Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Grand Challenge Course held in the Mojave Desert in the US state of Nevada at the weekend.
When cars can drive themselves, people will be considerably safer and freed of the burden of driving, making them productive while they are in the car because they can do other things," he said.

To make it appear that the car was driverless (when the ghost in the machine drove it) the rear floorboard was removed so that a second driver could be placed out of sight of the viewing audience.

A car that drives itself has long been the stuff of science fiction.
As Thrun, 38, talked about the car earlier this week, he was like a giddy schoolboy, particularly when he was hitching a ride with his robot car.
There's a map that tells the car where to drive, a planning tool that points out unsafe terrain, and a controller that translates all that into action.

We are fast approaching the day when cars steer themselves, and Hayden Turner has found one that almost does.
The 2006 Honda Accord is the first car in the world to offer this advanced safety technology.
It calculates how much steering pressure is needed to keep the car in the centre of the lane, and then the power-steering unit applies just that right amount.

The Pentagon has a direct interest in the development of robot cars and has set out to make 30 per cent of its ground vehicles driverless by 2015.
Politicians and urban planners who tear out their hair about deaths and injuries on the roads are likely to take a vivid interest in technology that could lead to an accident-free environment, or something close to it.

Though this car represents a "stock" non-racing car, don't be deceived, the real car has the heart and soul of a race car, and the fact is, Corvettes are raced all around the world in autocross's, amateur road events, and street races.
It might be that FLY does not have a non-racing attired driver to use, or it might be that this car is aimed at the collector, and maybe even the diecast collector who are not used to seeing a driver in the car.
Keep in mind that these front motor cars are prone to popping the drive shaft bushings out of their sockets (which results in stripped crown gears), and when truing these cars I recommend not turning the car around opposite to the direction of travel when truing the tires.

The "driverless car" developed by researchers at the University of Arizona looks like a junker, but it's really a high-tech prototype vehicle that can essentially drive itself.
The Arizona car also uses radar and video components developed at Carnegie-Mellon to locate objects ahead and stay within the lane, as well as an onboard computer to adjust the car's speed and steering.
Until the driverless car is ready to hit the road, commuters will either be stuck in traffic or be forced the take clean, cheap and efficient public transportation.
