Drogheda ([drɔ:də]) or [drɒhədə]) (Droichead Átha in Irish, meaning "Bridge of the Ford") is an industrial and port town in County Louth (on the border with County Meath) on the east coast of Ireland, 56 km north of Dublin.
In 2006 the population stood at 28,894 and is the 7th largest town in the Republic of Ireland.
Drogheda's coat of arms bears the star and crescent and has its origin with King Richard I (the Lionheart), in whose reign Drogheda was granted its charter in 1194 by Hugh de Lacy (after whom de Lacy bridge in Drogheda is named).

As Drogheda manager, McAlinden was the man primarily responsible for the vast amount of Northern players who donned the club colours between 1976 and 1979, and his record in both cup and league is unequalled by any other manager that has taken charge of Drogheda United.
In McAlinden's three year term, United never failed to reach the semi-finals of the FAI Cup, they lost the final 1-0 to Bohs in '76, a semi-final second replay to Limerick in '77, and a semi to Sligo Rovers in '78 in Oriel Park.
Furthermore United finished in the top three in the league in each season McAlinden and his assistant Arthur Brady were in command.

Normally Drogheda look to Stephen Bradley and Paul Keegan for inspiration but with the midfield duo continually struggling to find one of their own players, Shelbourne were able to keep the Boynesiders pinned into their own half for much of the first period.
Surprisingly for a Drogheda side with Graham Gartland and Jason Gavin at the heart of the defence, they struggled all night with crosses and Jason Byrne was inches away from doubling their lead when he volleyed a Dave Rogers cross just wide after 35 minutes.

The first half was poor fare as Drogheda dominated for the most part against a Waterford City side that looked shaky defensively and relied on the break for the few chances that came their way.
Drogheda pressure finally paid dividends eight minutes from the break when a Mark Leech strike was pushed out by keeper Holden to Declan O’Brien who finished to the net from six yards.
Waterford United will feature for the first time this season in one of the live TV games when their match away to Longford Town will be shown live on TG4.

Drogheda United have signed Tony Grant on a two-year contract from Bohemians with Mark Leech set to move in the opposite direction on loan until the end of the season.
A trainee with Leeds United, Grant signed for Preston North End in November 1995.
He was loaned out to Glenavon, making a permanent move to the Lurgan club in January 1997 where he scored the only goal in their Irish Cup final win over Cliftonville later that same year.
