The Droitwich Canal is a synthesis of two canals in Worcestershire, England; the Droitwich Barge Canal and the Droitwich Junction Canal, in England.
The junction canal was built to carry salt from Droitwich to the Worcester and Birmingham Canal.
In 1973 The Droitwich Canals Trust was formed and began to work towards the restoration of the canal.

Droitwich Spa is a town in northern Worcestershire, England, on the River Salwarpe and has a population of 22,585 (2001).
Droitwich remained a fairly small town until the 1960s, when the population was still barely 7,000; however, it has grown considerably since due to overspill from Birmingham.
Near Droitwich there is the central longwave broadcasting facility of the UK (Wychbold BBC transmitter), which is also used for transmissions in the medium wave range, AM transmitter Droitwich.

Birmingham Canal had an important place in the revival of interest in canals and canal traffic, a happy and pleasant circumstance a on which the founders of the Worcester/Birmingham Canal Society were able to build.
The Droitwich Canal from Hawford on the river Severn to Droitwich town was opened in 1771.  It was built principally to serve the salt trade from Droitwich.  It was 6¾ miles long with 8 locks and was designed to take barges 84 feet long by14 feet beam, carrying 80/70 tons of cargo.
Both the Droitwich Canal and the Droitwich Junction Canal were abandoned in 1939, and in 1941 the Sharpness New Dock Company removed some of the gates on the junction canal for use on the Worcester and Birmingham canal and stanked off the canal at its junction with the Worcester and Birmingham.

The Bill empowering construction of the canal received Royal Assent in 1795 and the canal was cut from the Kennet and Avon Canal at Semington, near Melksham, to the Thames at Abingdon during the years 1796 to 1810.
Droitwich Canals Trust, which led the campaign for the restoration of the canals over a thirty-year period, was set up by IWA.
The canals were abandoned in 1939 and eventually acquired by the Council, which leased them to Droitwich Canals Trust shortly after the Trust's formation in 1973.

The people of Droitwich Spa were misled; they thought that they were participating in a poll on the merits of an issue, but in fact they were participating in a poll to further the commercial interests of a specific supermarket chain.

Known as the Droitwich Junction Canal it was constructed to the same narrow dimensions of 7 foot width as the Worcester and Birmingham rather than the 14 foot width of the Barge Canal This was the last of the new canals to be constructed other than some cut-offs built in the Black Country.

As part of the proposed restoration of the Droitwich Canals, the project will see the creation of a linear canal park which will be promoted as a free leisure resource for local people and visitors to the area.
