Dromaeosaurids, "raptors" or members of the family Dromaeosauridae ("running lizards") are theropod (Any of numerous carnivorous dinosaurs of the Triassic to Cretaceous with short forelimbs that walked or ran on strong hind legs) dinosaur (Any of numerous extinct terrestrial reptiles of the Mesozoic era) s.
Dromaeosaurids are theropods (Any of numerous carnivorous dinosaurs of the Triassic to Cretaceous with short forelimbs that walked or ran on strong hind legs), and may be the sister taxon (additional info and facts about sister taxon) to Avialae (birds (Warm-blooded egg-laying vertebrates characterized by feathers and forelimbs modified as wings) and proto-birds).
Dromaeosauridae is sometimes seen as synonymous to Deinonychosauria, when Troodontidae is placed in less derived maniraptora (Advanced theropods including oviraptorids and dromaeosaurs and possibly even modern birds) ns.

Dromaeosauridae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
First discovered by the palaeontologist Dr A. Waldman, the characteristics of the Dromaeosauridae are distinctive; among other things they were notoriously fast and small.
Dromaeosauridae is a subgroup of Deinonychosauria, and includes such animals as Deinonychus, Dromaeosaurus, Velociraptor, Saurornitholestes, and Utahraptor.
Dromaeosauridae is sometimes seen as synonymous to Deinonychosauria, when Troodontidae is placed in less derived maniraptorans.

All of the Dromaeosauridae were obligatory bipeds which means that they always moved on two feet and were not able to use their forelimbs for locomotion.
Thus one could describe the Dromaeosauridae as the "kung-fu-fighters" amongst the dinosaurs which undoubtedly required them to be able to perform fast, well coordinated movements of both their legs and arms.
I found no literature on the sense of smell of Dromaeosauridae, but my guess would be that, as with other animals primarily relying on vision, their olfactory sense wasnt as well developed as it was/is in extinct allosaurids or extant crocodiles for example.

Deinonychosauria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dromaeosauridae includes some of the most fearsome killers of the Cretaceous period: Deinonychus, Velociraptor, and Utahraptor.
The largest known of these is possibly Utahraptor, and Microraptor was among the smallest (40 cm or 16 in?).
By some definitions, Deinonychosauria and Dromaeosauridae are synonyms.

Dromaeosauridae includes the famous "raptors" of Jurassic Park, which apparently have gone bald through the insertion of frog DNA.
Based on a partial subadult (approximately three-quarters adult size) skeleton originally referred to Velociraptor, the unfortunately-named Bambiraptor is another derived theropod, possibly close to the base of Dromaeosauridae, or maybe the same thing as Saurornitholestes.
Denmark's first named classic dinosaur is a dromaeosaurid based on a tooth, thought to be close to Dromaeosaurus itself (hence the name).

Troodontid arms were not reduced, but didnt reach the relative length of their sister family Dromaeosauridae.
They were propably not as agile as the Dromaeosauridae but instead were propably more adapted for speed, the arctometatarsalian condition, longer legs and slightly different femur to tighbone ratio being the main indicators for this assumption.
As for Dromaeosauridae, I could find no information regarding the sense of smell of the Troodontidae, but as stated for Dromaeosauridae it was propably not very much developed as is the case with other animals that rely mainly on their optical sense.

 Troodontidae - the Troodon Dinosaurs
Troodontidae has proven hard to classify, and can be linked by various characteristics with Spinosauridae, Dromaeosauridae, Oviraptorosauria, and Ornithomimosauria.
In the recent past, they were often combined with the ornithomimosaurians into a taxon called Bullatosauria, meaning "inflated reptiles" (referring to a "swollen" bone in the braincase).
With the discovery of Sinovenator, however, Troodontidae seems to mesh with Dromaeosauridae in Deinonychosauria, just as in the early 1980s.

Troodontidae   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-19)
Since 1969, Troodontidae has typically been allied with Dromaeosauridae in a clade known as Deinonychosauria, but this was by no means a consensus.
Holtz (1994) erected Bullatosauria, uniting Ornithomimosauria and Troodontidae into a holophyly clade on the basis of characters including, among others, an inflated parabasisphenoid and a long, low maxillary fenestra.
New discoveries of primitive troodontids from China, however (Sinovenator, Mei) display strong similarities between Troodontidae, Dromaeosauridae, and the primitive bird Archaeopteryx.

 Dromaeosauridae - the Dromaeosaur Dinosaurs
They are commonly referred to as the "raptors," but this is not a technical term favored by scientists to describe these predatory dinosaurs as the scientific term refers to modern day birds of prey, which include the eagles and hawks.
Dromaeosaurs are a small clade of theropod dinosaurs which exhibit some highly derived characteristics that they all share.
Many believe that modern birds and Dromaeosaurs shared a common ancestor sometime in the Jurassic period; Dromaeosauridae is thus termed the sister group of the clade Aves (birds).

 Dromaeosauridae
Dromaeosaurs constitute a small clade of theropod dinosaurs which exhibit some highly derived characteristics that they all share, especially modifications of the forelimb allowing for a flexible seizing function (which is thought to have been modified to create the bird "flight stroke").
According to current thinking, birds are hypothesized to have shared a common ancestor with the dromaeosaurs sometime in the Jurassic period; Dromaeosauridae is thus termed the sister group of the clade Aves (which includes all birds).
It may even be that the ancestry of birds lies within this group, which would make them dromaeosaurs too, but this is not at all established.

Apomorphies for Dromaeosauridae or dromaeosaurids with primitive birds are the short, tall second toe's second phalanx, the long prezygapophyses of the tail, and tall, quadratic ilium; the pubic peduncle is deep and long, with a distinct V-shaped notch in the ventral margin.

It has three main groups: Deinonychosauria, including Dromaeosauridae, or "raptors", and the gracile Troodontidae; a possible group comprised of Oviraptorosauria (Caenagnathidae, Oviraptoridae, and ?Avimimidae), and Therizinosauria; and Avialae.
Feathers or protofeathers are known for deinonychosaurians, basal oviraptorosaurians, basal therizinosaurians, and avialans (this one is easily verified), suggesting all maniraptorans possessed one or the other.
Unenlagia and its allies may form a Gondwanan radiation of small flying or flying-like long-snouted basal dromies, while Microraptor and its allies are mostly tiny basal dromies from Asia, also with aerial pretensions.
