Dromore is one of the eight suffragans of Armagh, Ireland.
The old cathedral of Dromore, which had been taken by the Protestants, was burnt down by the Irish insurgents in 1641, and rebuilt by Bishop Taylor twenty years later; but it has been far surpassed by the Catholic church recently erected.
To this patron saint of the diocese and its first bishop, besides the church at Dromore already referred to, are also dedicated the parish churches at Tullylish, Kilvarlin, in the parish of Magheralin, and Barnmeen near Rathfriland in the parish of Drumgath.

Chief credit for so many families from the Dromore and Dromara areas going to New Lanark, must be given to a Mr Willie Kerr, a native of Dromara District, who was employed by the Gourock Ropework Company's Mills in Port Glasgow, when the New Lanark Mills changed over from cotton to canvas in 1905.
Next i take, Richard Jess of Rock Road, Ballykeel, who was the head of one of the first families from Dromore District to settle in New Lanark, in the early 1900's, he was a lace weaver in Glasgow, when he heard of the demand for canvas weavers in New Lanark.
It was little wonder therefore that some thirty families from the Dromore and Dromara areas pulled up their roots, and with what little personal belongings they had set out for a new life in New Lanark.

At DROMORE WEST, about six miles southwest of Aughris, Culkin's Emigration Museum (June-Sept Mon-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 1-5pm; £2.50/¬3.17) fills in some of the story behind the deserted buildings that once littered the landscape hereabouts.
The museum stands on the site of Daniel Culkin's Shipping and Emigration Agency, which was founded in the nineteenth century and helped many local people on the bitter road to a better life overseas.
There's plenty of material on display about emigration and the Famine that fuelled it; most evocative of all is the original shipping agent's shop, a stark reminder of the harsh lives endured by thousands.
