WELCOME TO ATHENS - The ATHENS GUIDE - Light Voyager - Kerameikos - Dromos- Page One
"Dromos" was an ancient road, 1600 m length, which led from the "Dipylon Gate" to Plato's Academy.
On "Dromos" both sites, in the "Demosion Sema" (Public Tomb), were buried prominet Athenians and also those who fell in battles.
At the beginning of the "Dromos" there was a square, 40 m wide, where the Athenians used to organize ceremonies, games and funerary speeches.

Mycenaean Tholos Tombs and Early Mycenaean Settlements
The dromos of the Treasury of Atreus was cut through a large ceramic deposit of the LH IIIA1 period, the so-called Atreus Bothros, and one sherd assignable to the LH IIIB period was found sealed under a threshold block in the same tomb.
However, later Middle Minoan tholoi tend to have larger doorways, while the original entrance to Tholos B at Archanes, of MM IA date according to the excavator, lies at the end of a roofed passageway approaching the tomb at ground level from the southeast.
Since the orientation of the dromos and doorway are determined by the local topography, Mycenaean tholoi are not entered from any particular point of the compass.

The dromos was built by Nectanebo I. The ancient egyptians believed that sphinxes were "Guardians of the temple gates and the underworld".
The remains of the dromos (1st and 2nd photographs on the page) can still be seen today at the entrance to Luxor Temple.

The dromos is built of roughly processed stones bearing traces of paint and is covered with large stone tiles, which are preserved.
In the dromos (in its preserved end) scarce remains of the coating and painting are preserved.

 A Town Full of Gods
The alignment of its dromos, an impressive 210 metres long, was followed by new streets of the Roman period.
The dromos still articulates the modern visit, because it is the focus of the old and new excavations, and even the minaret in the adjacent modern hamlet has been built in line with it.
A third dromos led off east into the village to a (undiscovered) temple of Osiris or Min; the cult of both these deities is attested in papyri from Tebtunis.

These new avenues were lined with monumental buildings of classical style, including a major Ptolemaic temple dedicated to King Ptolemy III (246-222 BC) and Queen Berenike by the cavalry soldiers of Hermopolis, which stood east of the crossroads on the south side of Antinoe Street.
This was a massive structure built on a fired-brick foundation and embellished with many columns of red granite, which still lie on the ground.
On the opposite side of the Dromos from this building the remains of a Roman temple was excavated by the expedition, in the area immediately south of the earlier Pharaonic temple enclosure.

The derivatives of Ottoman makam segâh — usually called dromos houzam by modern bouzouki musicians — in Greek urban rebetika music underwent interesting changes during the period from the 1930s to the 1950s.
I have chosen the history of dromos houzam as a case study for throwing light on the alleged rapid Westernisation of Greek popular music after WW II.
Because of its close relationship with makam rast and the Western major, the rebetika form of makam segâh serves as an excellent indicator of change.
