But the Drones have been roaming a few other musical grounds as well, be it Rock or Death Metal, Jazz or Classics.
All this experience and all the band members own musical background, topped off with a whole lot of metal heart, add up to this special blend you get to hear with Drone.
I'm glad there is some good metal coming from Germany.

  Urban Dictionary: drone
drone is a sub type of doom music its usualy long records with one note being played again and again very slowly about 1 bpm which builds into a wall of sound
The nouns original meaning is used in context with "social" insects, which are ordered into a hive structure.
In an insect hive, drones are the workers - the ones gathering food, building the hive - in short: maintaining the hive, controlled by the queen, if not by some common instinctual fellowship and hierarchal order.

Zeek | Contemporary Psychedelia: From Transcendence to Immanence | Peter Bebergal
Strictly speaking, a drone is any repetitive or sustained, usually dissonant chord, which creates a musical theme to ground the rest of a song or movement.
Gregory Weeks describes the drone’s relationship to psychedelia and spirituality: “The drone is absolutely the fastest way to induce the drug phenomena or mindset within a straight listener or audience.
Drones are so simple, one would imagine they'd grow incredibly stale after several minutes, but instead they increase in interest and intensity in many cases.

Never-Stop Artificial Drone Reed   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Many popular designs for artificial drone reeds use plastic, wood or cane tongues which are often bent in order to have the correct "elevation" or lift at the free end.
The inner tube is chosen to suit the drone acoustically (correct inside diameter) while the outer tube is added merely to increase the surface area onto which the tongue is mounted and against which it vibrates.
Metal tubes can be cut rather deeply at the outer end; plastic should probably be left at least 1/2 diameter deep or else the body may tend to vibrate, which turns the reed into an odd form of double-reed and is more likely to create undesireable than desireable harmonics.

Chiff and Fipple Forums :: View topic - Drone Wood
Given that much of the drone is metal (some makers more than others), not to mention the mere fact that they are drones by nature, I would imagine there would be much less variation than you see among chanters of different woods.
The warmest sound to me is a boxwood drone fitted with an elder reed then cane then the ever reliable composite reed giving the sharpest sound, if you are really good at making cane and elder reeds its a good thing, but many beginners like the composite as they rarely go off.
Drone bore sizes and elder versus cane do make a difference but some of the best sets I've seen have a mini-sound box at the end of the tenor and baritone which you can see if the ivory mount is removable.

Korpiklaani & Drone - Effenaar - Eindhoven, 25 oktober 2006 | Live review | Lords Of Metal metal E-zine - Issue 64   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)

 Alien8 Recordings: Nadja
Nadja came to life in 2003 as a solo project of experimental/ambient musician & writer Aidan Baker (Die Stadt, Mystery Sea, Drone Records) as something of a flipside to his solo material; a means of exploring the darker, noisier, and heavier side of atmospheric and experimental music.
Combining dirge-like metal riffs and heavy, minimal percussion with ethereal melodicism and something of a shoegazer asthetic, Nadja attempts to create a swirling, amorphous wall of sound that is both obliterating and uplifting.
Elements of psychedelia, free jazz, drone, and experimental music all come into play with the ambient and melodic elements, but it’s the subterranean riffs of despair that make it so doomlike.

The drone stock is turned from birch left over from the Sacramento capitol restoration (my ex brother in law was a carpenter on that job, and gave me an assortment of hard wood scrap).
The tuning pin section of the bass drone required two pieces, as I didn't have enough long scraps; it is joined in a ferule to make one long section.

It is, above all, the combination of Cale's grinding viola drone with Reed's two-chord guitar figure of the Velvet Underground's song "Heroin" on their first album (1967) which laid the foundation for drone music as a Rock music genre in close proximity to the art-world project of the Theatre of Eternal Music.
In the late 90s and early 00s, drone music would be (and in some sense, perhaps is) hopelessly intermixed with rock, ambient, dark ambient, electronic and newage musics, but for a few extremists.
Many drone music originators, including Phill Niblock, Eliane Radigue and La Monte Young are still active and continute to work exclusively in long, sustained tones.

I got this CD out of a few that came in and I saved it for last because I had an inkling it might be special.
Then the first track "Drone" kicked in and I realized the bee sound effects were a fitting intro.
Projects of Johnny's include charting on CMJ with "Dark Black Past" and, the first single from "Drone", "Rain" was a Southern regional break-out on commercial radio.

 The Metal Crypt - Reviews
It embraces all the components of death metal (ultra fast riffing, guttural roars, and blasting drums), while integrating shards of bristly fl metal and warped doomy passages (particularly in the song 'As Idols Fall') seamlessly into their already immense sound without straying far from their heavy set death metal foundations.
They have evidently worked hard on enhancing their reputation in the scene, proof of which is shown in their infectious, almost euphoric melody lines and lead work, helping the band to outshine the usual death metal drone.
This is an album that is highly worthy of praise, simply for its overall aura of filthy evil which really manages to evoke an emotional response from the listener, and a band who wholeheartedly deserve a lot more consideration and plaudits than they currently receive.

Drone is a very esoteric genre which is a bit harder to describe.
Not emaning to start an argument or anything Zad but that post to me came out like you were condescending the guy and then reccomending him two very obvious drone bands whilst not being very knowledgable on the genre.
I dont think he was so much pointing out obvious drone bands as saying that their collaboration kicks ass, which it does.

The thirty-minute title track is a drone masterpiece of epic proportions, "Rocket #9" begins with field recordings of Canadian Geese before becoming an arcane cacophony and "Launching Pad At Pooneil Corners" is a complex collection of machine generated sounds and heavily altered guitar.

Paik's work falls under the instrumental drone rock banner, but it is so noisy and aggressive that I can't help thinking it would make for one pretty messed up acid trip.
Paik makes powerful drone metal music that is worth a listen if you're into the instrumental psychedelia noise genre.
Despite all the feedback and chaos, they are still considerably more accessible than most acts working under the same genre, and will therefore make for a fine introductory course.
