Drop D tuning - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dropped D tuning: DADGBe, also known as simply as Drop D, is a guitar tuning style in which the lowest (sixth) string is tuned down a whole tone ("dropped") to D rather than E as in standard tuning (EADGBe).
Dropped D tuning is perhaps most widely used in heavy metal or rock music as they take full advantage of the easier power chord transitions.
This tuning may be the most prominent tuning in modern rock and metal, but it is not uncommon for these guitarists to play in E-flat tuning/down tuning or dropped C tuning.

In drop D tuning the low E string is tuned down one whole step to D. It has the effect of giving almost any fingering of a D family chord a big, fat, glorious tonic bass.
Drop D tuning is used almost exclusively to play in the key of D, or sometimes D minor.
The fundamental difference between tuning and capoing becomes clear when you play the IV chord, the one that looks like a G. Unlike Drop D tuning, where the sixth string bass note for the IV chord is displaced by retuning, in Drop E partial capo configuration the IV chord plays normally.

Christian Guitar Forums - Drop D tuning for that heavy, electric sound...
In standard (EADGBe) tuning, most power chords and 5th chords (the basis of just about all hard rock songs) are played high on the neck on the 5th, 4th, and 3rd strings; with the 2nd and 1st (light)strings played open or muted.
The top three played open (DAD) is a D power chord (or D 5th, with the distortion, it's hard to tell), so to change chords, just move up the neck the number of frets equal to the number of half steps you want to go from your base D chord.
There are, of course, many other bands that use drop-d tuning, but these bands make a great deal of use out of that tuning in order to create their signature "heavier" feel.

When we use Drop D tuning, the E string becomes a D. This means that the top 3 strings on your guitar become D-A-D. To form a Drop D chord, simply move your finger on the 6th string up 2 frets (a whole step), barring the top 3 strings on your guitar.
In Drop D tuning, the 7th fret on the 6th string is now A. The root and octave notes remain the same, because we did not change those strings.

Drop D, as far as I know it, is when you tune your low E one octave below your D (4th string).
When I drop D tune, I fret the 5th fret on the A string and hit the low E and A string at the same time.
So the way I drop D tune with it is to use the tuner in the standard manner, EXCEPT, adjust the low E string so that it yields the standard "low E" pitch on the 2nd fret, not open.

This tuning is nicer, because normally when you want to play a A-powerchord, you just hit the E-string 5th fret, 'cause you know that's the A. In drop D-tuning, you mostly first have to think: the E is now D so the A is on the place where normally the B is, etc. etc.
The easiest way is just as Krystof said, play the D-string and then tune the E-string down to a D by matching the two.
Apart from adjusting the tuning to a specific singers voice or capacity, the tuning down/change of key makes the sound slightly heavier and just a bit darker, even if it's just half a step.

It's not a big deal to tune to a different note, but it is not clear as to when it is an advantage.
If your guitar/bass is not intonated properly, harmonics will do the trick better than tuning it to an adjacent string on the 5th fret, because the pitch will be either lower or higher by so little on the 5th fret if it is not intonated properly.
As with the harmonic tuning, this won't work between the guitar's G and B string, because the B string is tuned a half-step lower from the 5th fret (C).
