GNOME 2.16 has many speed improvements that are the result of optimization efforts that have been in-progress since 2.12.0 was released last year.

I think it started on Dropline which of course should be taken with a grain of salt since in the same email the guy tells folks that he (pat) will tell folks to use DL.
I don't care if it is Pat, Dropline, or you and me building from source, if Gnome wants to stay in the Desktop arena the ball is in their court to make it happen.
Dropline just isn't a good option for most folks and hasn't demonstrated that it is in line with Slackware in regards to stablity and isn't compatible with Slackware philosophy.

Dropline modifies Xorg to be more gnome freindly as it is configured more KDE friendly from Pat (per my understanding).
Dropline uses some of its own HAL and other system packages so things work the way they are supposed to, which as of 10.2 they don't without, well changing system packages in gnome.
Gnome is not developed "for" slackware, slackware is supposed to be built "for" Gnome, which Pat no longer does.

Patrick Volkerding has turned Slackware into a primarily KDE based distribution, and hence the default GNOME that comes with Slackware leaves a little to be desired.
Hence Todd from Dropline has single handedly put together a well polished and clean GNOME addition to Slackware that rivals the best.
At present, Dropline GNOME 2.8 consists of 192 individual packages, totalling just over 300mb which can be downloaded with Todd's dropline-installer.

As you know gnome has been dropped from Slackware, but never fear Dropline Gnome-2.14.1 is here.
Not only is it a great gnome install but it also gives you lots of the latest great stuff for gnome.
Dropline is easy to install and downloads everything from the net, I'm currently running dropline gnome and it's great.

07-20-2004 02:32 PM slack 10 has gnome 2.6, and I know that some people use dropline religiously, but the 2.6 that comes with slack is fine for me.............
If you want it Dropline is the way to go, but once you've installed it theres no going back without a re-install of Slack.
Dropline is useless IMHO, it is generally outdated and doesn't really do anything except add a couple extra configuration programs.

И перезаупсти X -ы c xfs Кстати я поклонник gnome, но не ругаю KDE, везде есть свои плюсы и минусы, но вот gnome этот новый не запускается, выводится splash заставка и усе...., перкомпилял и пересобирал около сотни раз разных пакетов, даже отдебагил это дело, но дошел до бесконечного цикла в потоке библиотеки glib, т.е.
Так что над gnome еще работать и пахать, хотя он мне нравится.

I find it quite disappointing that the Gnome packages are still the same as of june 2004.
Dropline has got a pretty good thing going with their own version of gnome designed for slackware.
Indeed, the Dropline project is heavily geared to creating a fully fledged Desktop with all the things Windows users look for when they switch.

Of the three, dropline GNOME offered the most complete GNOME desktop at that time -- the other two, Freerock GNOME and GWARE, were just getting started -- so I downloaded and installed it.
Dropline, unlike Slackware, is compiled for an i686 machine (x86_64 is now also available), so the minimal hardware requirements are a little more stringent than Slackware's.
Dropline GNOME works with the default Slackware 2.4 series kernel, but the project recommends installing and using the 2.6.16 series kernel so that auto-mounting works.

I've used dropline for a while, but the system packages it reinstalls are getting annoying, and slack 10.1 won't be officailly supported untill march...
The original slackware gnome is going unsupported by slack 11, and in 10.1 it's the same as 10 which is quite outdated (2.6).
Dropline also tends to add things that pat left out on purpose (PAM for instance).

He tenido mucha curiosidad en probar dropline GNOME en Slackware 10.2, porque todo el mundo comenta lo fácil que es instalarlo.
Una de las cosas que quería comprobar era si por algún motivo era incompatible, con Swaret, ya que con dropline GNOME he podido leer que tenerlo al día es todavía más fácil que instalarlo.
