Dropping point - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dropping Point is a qualitative property of lubricating grease that gives a general indication of the temperature at which a grease passes from a semi-solid to liquid state under specific test conditions.
Dropping point is used in combination with other test-based properties to determine the suitability of greases for specific applications.
The dropping point is the temperature recorded on the test tube thermometer when a drop of grease falls through the hole in the grease cup.

Patent 4376060: Process for preparing lithium soap greases containing borate salt with high dropping point
There are many fields of application for grease compositions where a high dropping point is required, as for example, in the lubrication of traction motor bearings.
Despite all the noted disclosures of high dropping point greases there still is the need for improved compositions and/or processes for developing greases with increased high dropping points.
This invention relates to a process for preparing high dropping point lithium soap greases comprising a combination of a selected lithium soap of hydroxy fatty acid and a monolithium salt of boric acid wherein an effective additive amount of selected water soluble polyhydroxy compound is added to the system when forming the lithium borate salt.

The ASTM D2265 dropping point test is commonly used to aid in the identification of the grease type and as a quality control tool.
Although there may be a correlation between dropping point and performance in the field, the dropping point result has limited application since it is a static test and provides little information about the properties of a grease as the sample is heated to and beyond the dropping point.
Once the strain or stress reaches a critical point, the grease structure breaks down as evidenced by a sharp drop in the G’ value.

Their dropping point is approximately 350ºF or higher, although they are not intended to be used in continuous operation at temperatures above 275ºF. Barium-soap greases are chosen for a variety of jobs, especially for nearly all types of bearing lubrications.
They have a dropping point of approximately 350ºF, and can be used in continuous temperatures of 300ºF. One reason for their successful low-temperature performance is that they are made with oil having a low pour point.
The dropping point of this type of grease is 500ºF or even higher.

Increase in the dropping point was related to changes in the fibre of diurea grease.
