Caithness CWS - History - Articles - Saint Drostan In Caithness
After that Columcille gave to Drostan that town and blessed it and left as word (warning) "Who soever shall come against it, let him not be many yeared (or) victorious." Drostans tears came on parting from Columcille.
Drostan had a foundation at Aberdour on the Buchan coast which probably preceded that at Deer.
To the north of the present church is marked on the large scale map a small group of rocks off the coast with the name 'Papel' which may indicate an early church connection.

Caithness CWS - Caithness Field Club - Annual Bulletins - 1987 - April - St Drostan In Caithness
The name Drostan appears in many corrupted forms including Tristan, Trostan, Tustan, Trothan and Tear and it is commemorated in the old Caithness market day of Tustimas (Beaton 1909, 83) or Trothermas which was held as late as 1902 on the fourth Tuesday in November at Olrig (Munro 1981, 15).
It is necessary to attempt to trace the story back to the village of Deer in the Buchan district of Aberdeenshire where now stand the remains of the old Cistercian abbey of Deer, founded in 1219 by William Comyn, Earl of Buchan (Simpson 1964, 1).
The connection between St. Tear and Drostan is not immediately obvious, but just as the D in Drostan sometimes becomes a T, as in Trostan, the name Tear may be a corruption of Deer which was the place of Drostan's earlier foundation in Buchan.

 The Book of the Deer
Columcille and Drostan, son of Cosgreg, his pupil, came from I as God revealed to them to Aberdour, and Bede the Pict was Mormaor of Buchan before them, and it was he who gifted to them that town in freedom for ever from mormaor and toiseach.
After that Collumcille gave that town to Drostan and he blessed it, and left the word, Whosoever comes against it, let him not be long-lived or successful.
It was in all probability handed down from the close of the sixth or from a later period, but it must not be forgotten that a period of six hundred years had elapsed between the events here recorded and the record itself as it appears.

Drostan’s eyes dragged on the ground sheepishly, “And she’s not exactly my fiancee either.” The thin man shrugged in his turn, while Boann continued to extend her hand to him.
While the O’Connell’s had gone to bed, and Drostan had fallen out with yet another bottle of liquor at his chest just outside of his tent, Boann was sitting at the edge of their encampment, with her horse, taking advantage of the cool cool night to smoke a finely rolled cigarette.

 The memoranda of grants
It narrates that Comgeall mac eda gave from Orti to Furene to Columba and to Drostan; that Moridach M'Morcunn gave Pit mac Garnait and Achad toche temni, the former being Mormaor and the latter Toiseach.
Cainneach and Domnall and Cathal sacrificed all these offerings to God and to Drostan from beginning to end free, from Mormaors and from Toiseachs to the day of judgment.
The next set of grants entered on the margin of this remarkable record are as follows: Donchad M'Meic mec Hidid (probably the same with Eda, and therefore Aoidh), gave Acchad Madchor to Christ and to Drostan and to Coluimcille; Malechi and Comgell and Gillecriosd M'Fingun witnesses, and Malcoluim M'Molini.

But despite hearing the arguments from campaigners to save St Drostan's, Aberdeenshire Council's director of social work and housing, Colin McKenzie, maintained that closing St Drostan's was part of a longer term plan to provide a different type of care in the future.
Sadly for residents and their families this means closing care homes such as St Drostan's and building new types of facilities, such as 24-hour extra care sheltered housing staffed with housing officers.

Brockie's manuscript (p3, 754) which was in the library at Blair's College, states that "the monastery of St Drostan, commonly Kil Drostan, now Abelour, was situated on the right bank of the River Spey" where the church now is and there his relics "were garnished and kept with great veneration.
In the archives of the Scotch College of St James at Ratisbon there is an old catalogue of monasteries in which occurs this ancient Monastery of Drostan and in which it is stated that St Drostan was sent to the north from Iona by Abbot Fergnus in AD 618.
Now, there may be a confusion here with St Drostan's foundation at Deer but it is worth noting that the Abbot of Iona from 605 - 623 AD was, indeed, an individual by the name of Fergnae.
