Drought Tolerant Plants for North and Central Florida
Drought tolerant plants are also an important component of "xeriscapes," landscapes designed to conserve water, because drought tolerant plants typically use less water than other plants.
Plants that have been grown in shade or in a well-watered environment may experience drought stress when moved into full sunlight or arid environments because the plants have been acclimated to having relatively large amounts of water available.
Drought can be defined as the absence of rainfall or irrigation for a period of time sufficient to deplete soil moisture and injure plants.

Drought tolerant and resistant California native plants.
Drought resistant plant, drought tolerant plant, drought adapted plant, low -water- use plant, are all terms garden, landscape and nursery persons use to describe whatever plant they think is the drought tolerant of the month (in flower of course!).
It's really easy to plant a garden with native plants that are very drought tolerant (they lived there long before you showed up with a garden hose) and look very good, especially with a few sprinkles with the hose.
Most truly drought tolerant plants hate drip irrigation.

Plant Geneticist Identifies Drought - Tolerant Gene
He has licensed his discovery to Kingston-based Performance Plants, a small biotechnology company working on a drought-tolerant strain of canola, one of Canada's leading export crops.
"Drought is obviously a problem for farmers worldwide; these genetically engineered plants will be able to wait out periods of drought without dying." In October, he co-authored a paper in the journal Science outlining his discovery.
These possibilities are a step closer, thanks to a U of T professor's isolation of the gene that controls drought tolerance in plants.

 Floridata: Drought Tolerant Plants
A plant is drought tolerant if it can survive a dry spell of more than 2 or 3 months without supplemental watering.
To reduce the need for supplemental irrigation in your landscape, choose drought tolerant plants.
This means that most native plants from regions that occasionally experience 2-3 months without rain (most of the continental US, for example), are drought tolerant.

 Drought Tolerant Plants
Tough plants are required for these tough times.  These heat- and drought-tolerant varieties include trees, shrubs, groundcovers, perennials, annuals and even some fruiting plants.  Some are native, some are not and some can survive on natural rainfall once established.
The list below is not all-inclusive, but the plants represent some of the most drought-tolerant plants available in the nursery trade.  One category listed identifies drought-tolerant plants that have been known to experience significant problems and should probably be used sparingly.
Granted, in periods of extended drought like we are experiencing, the plants will not look as lush as during normal rainfall periods and production of flowers and fruit will be diminished.  However, with liberal use of mulch, and infrequent but deep irrigation, homeowners should be able to create and sustain quality landscapes using these plants.

 Ice plant
Ice plants are often used in southwestern landscapes because they are very interesting, drought-tolerant plants that produce beautiful flowers all summer.
They are called ice plant because they have bladder-like hairs on the leaf surface that reflect and refract light in a manner to make it appear that they sparkle like ice crystals.
Since the name ice plant is a "common name" rather that a scientific name, it is applied to many different plants that may appear to sparkle.

When well established the plants are very drought tolerant, and continue to produce bright and attractive blooms in the hottest of weather.
However, some folks don't want to wait for the hotter days of summer to cause plants to resprout and for the impatient types, I recommended that Firebush be used as an annually planted plant.
As a rule, it takes at least 5 to 7 plants of a variety to create the desired effect in small areas and greater numbers in larger areas (check with local nurserymen who sell transplants by the flat for a reduced cost).

Get The Best of The Blues: Part 2: Perennials
It prefers full sun, but will grow in any average soil, is drought tolerant, and so hardy that it's often planted along roadways.
But as I discussed in my last article, "Get The Best of The Blues: Part 1: Annuals", getting plants with flowers that are that true rich shade of blue that's such a perfect foil for reds, yellows, and whites can be problematical, as many plants that are described as blue actually aren't.
