 GENUKI:Welsh Cattle Drovers in the C19th - 3
While the bulk of the drovers doubtless made little contribution to life outside their own communities, there are numerous examples to illustrate the profound influence of individuals upon the cultural, spiritual and financial life of Wales.
While the nineteenth century drover was regarded with mistrust and suspicion by many of his contemporaries, it is nevertheless true that from among the ranks of the drovers arose many men of the highest integrity and cultural attainment, whose contribution to the economic and social life of their times was of the greatest importance.
The benefits of such an arrangement to the drovers were made clear by one David Williams who contended that the availability of cash permitted him to buy cattle at a cheaper rate than would have been possible had he been forced to obtain credit.

These sources of grievance to the drover were, in consequence, avoided wherever possible, and he sought out tracks which enabled him to by-pass the turnpikes and along which the drove could maintain an uninterrupted progress.
It was not always possible for the drover to avoid the main highways, and the advantages of the more devious routes had to be weighed in relation to the destination and the time taken to arrive there, so that the ordinary highways were employed for considerable stretches.
Arrived at their destination, the drovers tasks were not completed until the cattle fatigued and emaciated after the long trek, had been safely disposed of in the fat pastures previously arranged and rented for their reception.

 BC Museum: Droving
At the period we speak of, a Highland drover was victualled for his long and toilsome journey with a few handfuls of oatmeal and two or three onions, renewed from time to time, and a ram's horn filled with whisky, which he used regularly, but sparingly, every night and morning.
How it became to be applied to drovers is not clear, however, it may be that the profession of droving arose in cattle reaving or rustling, which, at least in Scotland, was for many years a fact of life.
Drovers often carried money between farmers and merchants, were authorized to sell livestock along their routes, and were responsible for the safe delivery of both livestock and currency.

 GENUKI : Welsh Cattle Drovers
The book does not claim to be a comprehensive history of droving between Wales and England and although one chapter deals with evolution of the cattle trade most of the remaining pages are concerned with the trade in the C19 for which relatively abundant sources material is available.
Inevitably the financial success or failure of cattle dealing was inextricably linked with the fortunes of the Welsh farmer who raised the store cattle which were eventually sold to the grazier of the Midland Plains or the stall and yard feeders of the Eastern Counties of England.
Thus many of the ancient drovers' routes described in the book were still used for their original purpose within living memory.
