The nature of the tragic incident also varies: it is most often a man standing idly by while someone else drowns (or nearly drowns), but other forms mention a deliberate drowning (i.e., murder), a rape (of Collins' wife), and Collins' catching his wife in an adulterous act.
The time lapse between Collins' witnessing the incident and his writing the song varies: he wrote the song right away, he waited several years, or he wrote the song many years later (because he was a child when the incident took place).
While Phil sings the song to him, the spotlight is on the man in the front row.

 Stan by Eminem Songfacts
In his last letter, Stan writes how he is like the drowning man in the Phil Collins song "In The Air Tonight." The rumor, which is not true, is that Collins saw a man watch another man drown, then sang the song to him at a concert to let him know he knew.
The song ends with Eminem answering his letter and realizing Stan was the man in the news who drove off the bridge.
The part of this song that was deemed anti-gay was the line where Stan writes, "We could have been together" and Eminem replies, "That's the kind of thing that makes me think we shouldn't meet each other." Elton John didn't have a problem with it.

Mazursky here, aside from the thought of a latter-day vagabond trying to drown himself in a Beverly Hills swimming pool, was the instant and intuitive rapport between the bookseller and the man he rescues.
Mazursky has found, in precisely the kind of alienation that the song describes, the makings of a California comedy that is generous and scathing in equal measure.

William Mulholland was a fine-featured, handsome man, who, although a shade under six feet, always gave the impression of being taller because of his straight-backed, commanding presence and the penetrating gaze of his blue eyes.
In old age, Mulholland told certain questioners that he had no recollection of his mother, who had died when he was seven, but to his children he sometimes spoke of her, remembering that her wit, lively nature, and love of song had been an antidote to his father's grim seriousness.
