 | | America's first "czar" was an Energy Czar (John Love) appointed by President Nixon in 1973 during the gas crisis, and American government has also had an AIDS czar, a Land-Use czar, a Food czar, a Privacy czar, a Manufacturing czar, and a Counterintelligence czar. |
 | | It's obvious that the political appointment of a czar is intended for when some social crisis befalls the nation, but another meaning is the unfortunate legacy of its relationship to other terms, like "caesar" or "fuhrer," which signifies a strong man whose orders are to be obeyed without question. |
 | | The primary role of a drug czar, however, is to be the nation's spokesperson on drug policy. |
