A drug overdose is the accidental or intentional use of a drug or medicine in an amount that is higher than is normally used.
Overdose of this drug causes liver damage with symptoms that include loss of appetite, tiredness, nausea and vomiting, paleness, and sweating.
Diagnosis of a drug overdose may be based on the symptoms that develop, however, the drug may do extensive damage to the body before significant symptoms develop.

Drug overdose - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A drug overdose occurs when a drug is ingested in quantities and/or concentrations large enough to overwhelm the homeostasis of a living organism, causing severe illness or death.
The word "overdose" implies that there is a safe dosage and therefore the term overdose is commonly only applied to drugs, not poisons.
Drug overdoses are sometimes caused intentionally to commit suicide, but many drug overdoses are accidental and are usually the result of either irresponsible behavior (such as overindulging at a party), or the misreading of product labels.

Opiates, cocaine and alcohol combinations in accidental drug overdose deaths in New York City, 1990-98
The accidental drug overdose death rate in 1990 was 7.33 per 100 000 person-years and comparable age-, race- and sex-adjusted drug overdose death rate was 13.89 per 100 000 personyears in 1993 and 11.13 in 1998.
The proportion of accidental drug overdose deaths caused by opiates, cocaine or alcohol was 97.6% overall and remained similar from 1990 (95.0%) to 1998 (97.9%).
The rate of overdose deaths positive for either opiates or cocaine alone increased slightly during the study period but the majority of the variation in overdose death rates was observed among the rate of overdose deaths attributed to drug combinations of opiates, cocaine and alcohol.

Smart Steps, Treating Baltimore's Drug Problem
Drug offenses are the leading reason for incarceration of state prisoners convicted of crimes committed in Baltimore.  As of September 2000, half of the 10,200 prisoners who had been sentenced in Baltimore committed drug offenses.
Drug offenses are also the leading reason for which Baltimore youth enter the state’s juvenile justice system.  In 1998, nearly one-quarter of the 12,800 juvenile justice intake cases involving Baltimore youth were due to alcohol (128) and other drug offenses (1,128 for possession and 1,770 for distribution).
Drug possession arrests fueled the increase in the drug arrest rate in suburban Baltimore, particularly in Anne Arundel County, where the rate of heroin and cocaine possession arrests rose 67 percent and the rate of marijuana possession arrests nearly tripled between 1994 and 1998.

Overdose, systemic infections and other 'non-local' damage
Drug users tend to disregard many health problems, thinking that they are a direct result of their drug use, whether they are or not.
Violent methods of suicide among drug users are much easier to quantify when examining coroners' records than a deliberate drug overdose in an already drug-tolerant individual, where it can be difficult to determine exactly what it was that ultimately proved fatal.
It should be noted that many overdoses are not of a single substance and a coma may be due to the action of drugs not counteracted by naloxone.

 Drug Overdose Killing Senior Citizens
Nationally, 2002 drug trend, the percent increase in spending on prescription drugs, was projected to be 14.3 percent, according to the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Studies (CMS) formerly known as HCFA.
Drug price inflation increased 33% in 2002 over 2001, contributing the largest portion of drug trend in 2002 and outpacing traditional trend drivers including drug mix (the move to new, often more expensive, therapies), increase in the number of people taking medications and the increase in days of therapy.
Among the cornerstones of its drug trend management efforts, Medco Health's Generics First program, the nation's first generic drug sampling and education program, demonstrated a significant jump overall in the generic prescribing rates of physicians participating in the program over prescribing rates of a comparison group of physicians in 2001.

Overdoses kill more people locally than traffic accidents or homicides, Bell said before outlining ways to prevent an overdose or to intervene if one occurs.
While eliminating drug use is the best way to prevent overdose, "the reality is a lot of people continue to use drugs," Bell told about 75 inmates gathered in a maximum security area for her presentation earlier this month.
She also recommended awareness of factors that could affect drug tolerance, such as illness and periods of drug treatment or incarceration, and suggested that her listeners not be alone when they use drugs.

HBNS: Deaths From Accidental Prescription Drug Overdose on Rise in New Mexico
Accidental overdose deaths in New Mexico caused by prescription drugs increased at a higher rate than those caused by illegal drugs such as heroin and cocaine, according to a new study covering a 10-year period.
Unintentional prescription drug overdoses accounted for 1.9 deaths out of 100,000 deaths at the beginning of the study period, rising to 5.3 overdose deaths out of 100,000 deaths.
Although this is the first study to evaluate the contribution of prescription drugs to the unintentional overdose death rate in New Mexico, the authors say that such deaths are increasing around the world in tandem with increasing medical and nonmedical use of prescription drugs, especially narcotic pain relievers.

HIV Infection Is Associated with a Higher Risk of Death from Drug Overdose
The aim of this prospective cohort study was to quantify the association of HIV infection with overdose mortality and explore the potential mechanisms.
Survival analyses using marginal structural and standard Cox models were used to evaluate the effect of HIV infection on the risk of overdose mortality.
Potential interventions include counseling at post-HIV testing counseling, closer monitoring and easier access of drug abuse treatment to drug users with HIV infection, and in cities where naloxone is available, training those with authority to prescribe or administer naloxone to drug users, which has been shown substantially to reduce overdose morbidity and mortality.

Anti-anxiety drug overdose risk - benzodiazepine Healthfacts - Find Articles
Overdoses of certain benzodiazepine anti-anxiety drugs (e.g., Valium) are associated with significant risks, according to a study published in the British Medical Journal (28 January 1995).
The data was controlled to eliminate confounding factors, such as the amount of drug taken in overdose, multiple drug use, age, sex, concurrent alcohol use, history of benzodiazepine use and drug or alcohol abuse.
The difference between the safety of the various benzodiazepines, according to the researchers, appears related to each drug's rate of absorption in the body and the degree of sedation each causes in overdose.

Every year, many PCP abusers are treated in hospital emergency rooms for psychotic symptoms, such as delusions and paranoia, or for overdose of the drug.
Because the PCP antibody would remove the drug from the bloodstream of a pregnant woman, theoretically it would be possible to use it to block the fetal brain damage that prenatal PCP exposure has been shown to cause in rats, Dr. Owens says.

Final figures are not available yet, but state officials projected that overdose deaths in 2005 would reach 178, most of them accidental, compared with 167 highway deaths.
The 2005 highway death toll was the lowest since the 166 fatalities recorded in 1982, reflecting stepped-up patrols on risky stretches of highway and a greater emphasis on driver education, state officials said.
According to a preliminary report released by the state, the number of accidental drug deaths increased from 19 in 1997 to an estimated 140 for 2005.
