 The Drukpa Kagyu Heritage Project - Overview
The Drukpa Kagyu tradition is one of the schools of the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.
The East Tibetan (Kham) branch of the Drukpa Kagyus were headed for generations by the succesive incarnations of the great Khamtrul Rinpoche who established the principal seat of the Eastern Tibetan Drukpa Kagyu tradition at an isolated centre called Khampagar.
Adeu Rinpoche, who at that point was the only holder of the whole Eastern Drukpa Kagyu tradition surviving, was attempting to ensure the survival of the Drukpa Kagyu tradition by transmitting the entire set of empowerments and reading transmissions of the tradition to all of the tulkus and teachers concerned.

He was recognized as the reincarnation of the great Drukpa scholar Pema Karpo (1527-1592) - himself the incarnation of Tsangpa Gyare Yeshe Dorje (1161-1211), the founder of the Drukpa Kagyupa branch - and was groomed as a potential successor to the Drukpa throne.
The principal threats to his increasing authority came externally from Tibet, initially from the Tsang Desi and later from the controlling Gelugpa School, and internally from a coalition of the other religious schools in the region called the "five groups of lamas".
By 1656 central and eastern Bhutan had been brought under Drukpa political rule, thus concluding the process of internal integration and heralding the birth of the nation.

The 5th Gyalwang Drukpa, Pagsam Wangpo, was born in Chongye (in Tsang, western Tibet) into the same family as the 5th Dalai Lama.
During his time, the Drukpa lineage was most popular in the Himalayan range around northern India, and Pagsam Wangpo received the royal patronage of many kings in the area.

Lhotshampas were identified as a threat to the Drukpa monarchy and legislation was passed that attempted to destroy their cultural and religious identity.
Use of Dzonkha, the Drukpa dialect, was made mandatory in all public areas despite the inability of a large number of Lhotshampas to speak the dialect and the fact that king Wangchuk himself was known to speak Nepali language in casual conversations.

Drukpa Kunley was born in Tibet in the year of the wood-pig in the eighth cycle—or, as we would call it, 1455.
