The Karma Kagyu Lineage became the most extended of the four original branches of the Dakpo Kagyu tradition, the name given to the teachings transmitted by Gampopa (1079-1153), the deep scholar and spiritual Teacher, whose appearance was predicted by the own Buddha Sakyamuni.
The Kamtsang Kagyu tradition was established by Ist Karmapa Tusum Kyenpa, that inherited the Kagyu tradition from Gampopa.

The central teaching of Kagyu is the doctrine of Mahamudra, or "the Great Seal", as elucidated by Gampopa in his various works.

The Drukpa Kagyu tradition is one of the schools of the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.
The East Tibetan (Kham) branch of the Drukpa Kagyus were headed for generations by the succesive incarnations of the great Khamtrul Rinpoche who established the principal seat of the Eastern Tibetan Drukpa Kagyu tradition at an isolated centre called Khampagar.

Drukpa is a nickname for Bhutanese people because Bhutan has frequent thunderstorms, which are associated with the activity of celestial dragons.
The Kagyu denomination is held to originate with Vajradhara, the buddha Dorje Chang, who embodies all forms and aspects of all buddhas.
