If Drukqs is the result of medication James has been imbibing during his three-year hiatus, then this is indeed better living through chemistry.
The songs on Drukqs are very distinct from the songs people like when first listening to aphex twin.
Drukqs is an advanced album in the aphex style and is the manifestation of Richard James' most honest internal voice out of all the albums made under all of his identities.

After two years of public silence and what many had judged to be his final exit from the world of corporate music, the original IDM iconoclast has returned with another puzzle.
The problem with Drukqs, a two-disc, 30-track medley that allegedly wraps up Richard D. James' contract with Warp Records, is that there's really no puzzle at all.
Drukqs speaks a familiar tongue, instead of inviting us to learn new languages; it gives us the answers before asking the riddles.

Some speculation flew around as to whether Drukqs is a compilation of random archive recordings from James' vault or whether it truly is new material.
Drukqs switches from drill 'n' bass mayhem through a gently subdued piano piece and on to throbbing emotive ambience ("Omgyjya-Switch", "Strothatynhe" and "Gwely Mernans" respectively), even the numerous ambient sections and tracks are quite wonderfully portrayed.
While the tracks on Drukqs differ in style quite dramatically, they all bear the trademark of a quality electronic music artist; they just have that confident accomplished sound about them.

"Drukqs," a two-disc movement released in December of last year, is a little bit of everything.
Yes, Aphex Twin is known for his proficiency at creating beautiful ambient soundscapes and layering them over frenzied beats, but "Drukqs" is as much an experiment with new music as it is a re-combination of the Aphex formula.

 Drukqs - Compare prices
Drukqs is the 2001 release from Cornish Techno wizard Richard D James aka the Aphex Twin.
Deified in the sphere of experimental dance--partly for his indisputable sporadic genius, but partly, it must be said, for his bullish refusal to play the whole "releasing records" game, and the subsequent mythology that such contrariness invariably prompts--every new release is greeted like it's the future of music on plastic.
But once that's out the way, and you're free to immerse yourself in the tangled depths of Drukqs, it's simply a relief to know that Aphex is still making music: fiendishly complex, lovably dumb, and still aeons ahead of the legion of imitators.

Drukqs constantly alternates between tensed constructions and abyssal moments of atmospheric calm, without warning or obvious link in between.
One would be forgiven to think that it is a case of Warp getting increasingly impatient about new Aphex Twin material, and James throwing in a handful of tracks lifted from his legendary enormous catalogue.

James is known for a warped sense of humor, and the only sense I can make of Drukqs is that it might be a big joke: one on his fans and followers.
Instead of pushing the limits of electronic music again, James has decided to play some pranks (the title of the album itself appears to be a pun of sorts: "Druk qs" is a phonetic approximation of "drug use").
