Drum (musical instrument) - MSN Encarta
Drum (musical instrument), musical instrument consisting of one or two stretched membranes, called heads, held taut across a bowl-shaped or tubular frame, called a shell, and sounded by percussion; that is, by striking the instrument with the hands or with sticks.
Drum shells that are basically tubular vary in their actual shape, from cylindrical, as in a bass drum; to barrel shaped, as in some drums of China and India; to goblet shaped, as in the single-headed Middle Eastern darabuka; to hourglass shaped, as in the double-headed Japanese tsuzumi.
The snare drum is related to the tabor, a double-headed drum, often with a simple gut snare, which is played in combination with a three-hole pipe in modern European folk music, as it was in the Middle Ages (from about the 5th century to the 15th century ad).

Drum (musical instrument) - MSN Encarta
Drum (musical instrument), musical instrument consisting of one or two stretched membranes, called heads (or skins), held taut across a bowl-shaped or tubular frame, called a shell, and sounded by being struck with the hands or with sticks.
If the drum shell is so shallow that it cannot act as a resonator, as on a tambourine, the drum is called a frame drum.
Some instruments called drums, such as the steel drums of the Caribbean (usually played in ensemble in steel bands), are unrelated to the membranophones; these instruments are made entirely of resonant solid material and are thus classified as idiophones.

 History of Drums
A drum is called a membranophone, or an instrument that creates sound by striking a stretched membrane with some type of object, usually a rounded stick.
Drums consist of a hollowed-out piece(called the body), a membrane stretched over the end of the drum, and tuning keys or pegs which tighten or loosen the membrane to achieve different tones.
Drum kits, a grouping of various toned drums, originated in marching bands and parade bands in New Orleans.

Drum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A "drum" is a musical instrument in the percussion family, technically classified as a membranophone.
Drums with two heads covering both ends of a cylindrical shell often have a small hole somewhat halfway between the two drumheads; the shell forms a resonating chamber for the resulting sound.
On modern band and orchestral drums, the drumhead is affixed to a hoop (also called a "rim"), which in turn is held onto the shell by a "counterhoop", which is then held by means of a number of tuning screws called "tension rods" (also known as lugs) placed regularly around the circumference.
