Drum and bass is undeniably one of the most futuristic musical forms in existence.
Drum and bass producers struggle agonizingly to tweak sounds and samples into test tubes full of bottled lightning.
Arcing and hissing with electricity, drum and bass tunes can sound smooth and jazzy or hyperindustrial and jagged, but are usually defined by their characteristic two-step, "Amen" break drum samples.

Intelligent drum and bass - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Intelligent drum and bass (IDB) (a derivation of Intelligent Jungle) is the widespread term for the subgenre of drum and bass emphasising influences from lounge jazz and ambient music.
Although the mellow and tranquil atmospheres contrast with the darkness and aggression found in much dancefloor drum and bass, the intelligent style is still generally produced with the DJ and dancefloor in mind, and not simply "chill-out" material.
Also known as atmospheric drum and bass, or "the Good Looking sound" (after the record label synonymous with the style), intelligent is nevertheless the most widespread term.

Electronic Music Styles | Techno - House - Trance - Drum and Bass - Deep House - Progressive
Drum and bass is a genre of electronic music that rests on the foundation of the breakbeat – as opposed to the regular 4/4 beat adopted in house.
Drum and bass is usually produced at a faster tempo than most other forms of electronic music (often in the range of 160-180 bpm).
The roots of drum and bass lie in a form of electronic music called "hardcore," which was born in the rave culture that emerged in Europe in the early 90s – especially in the United Kingdom (see the description of techno).

Construction Kits - The first part of the collection is given over to seven very comprehensive drum and bass construction kits, these use the time honoured method of presenting a full version of what is here virtually a full track, and then giving you a breakdown of individual samples.
The sounds themselves are fairly standard drum and bass fare, at 160 or 170 BPM and a little clean and anaemic for my taste, but well recorded and presented and great fun to play around with.
Whilst not getting away from drum and bass styles here the producers have introduced a little bit more in the way of cutting sounds.

 Drum 'n' Bass
To top it off, the drums are almost always built around "breakbeats," or samples from drum-solo sections of hip-hop, reggae, and soul songs; this adds a level of historical confusion to the mix -- the "where have I heard that beat before?" factor.
But it'll be a rocky road to mass acceptance for these would-be junglistic messiahs: drum 'n' bass's most potent advocates, the small independent labels and the thousands of DJs who spin their records, are still nervous about the threat of commercial takeover by jungle-lite.
Although his work is often knocked by the hardcore inner sanctum of drum 'n' bass for being too corny, too far removed from the street or the clubs, or too commercial, it's actually quite subversive.
