Drum and bugle corps (classic) Summary
With the advent of the radio, bugle signaling units became obsolete and surplus equipment was sold to veteran organizations (such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, two major organizers for classic drum corps).
Drum and bugle corps have often been mistaken for marching bands, since there is a similarity to both groups having horns and drums; and they are both essentially bands of musicians that march.
Drum and bugle corps is, traditionally, a musical activity which extended the cameraderie of combat to a musical "battle" on (football)-sized fields.

Drum and Bugle Corps or Marching Band?
Drum and bugle corps are regulated by alphabet soup organizations (DCI, DCH, DCA); marching bands, whether they be college or high school, seldom have to answer to anyone other than their own school board.
Drum corps members tend to be on the older side, as well.
Because drum corps can pick and choose its members according to talent level (and because they beat you into the ground during practice), the average drum and bugle corps achieves a higher level of excellence than does the typical marching band, although I'm sure there are exceptions.

Piping and drumming judges tend to look at pipe-sections and side-drum lines with the attitude that, since it's a pipe band, everyone should play together all or most of the time.
In terms of the number of players, if a drum was to be pitched to each note of the chanter, then the higher pitched drums would obviously be smaller and might even be clustered together and played by a single player.
Pipe band tenors seem to be going through the evolution that marching band / drum and bugle corps did with their tenor / bass drums back in the 60's and 70's, where single drums gave way to multiple pitches, sizes and much more intricate cross-drum patterns.
