  Drum machine Information
Most modern drum machines are sequencers with a sample playback (rompler) or synthesizer component that specializes in the reproduction of drum timbres as well as the sound of other traditional percussion instruments.
Drum machines can either be programmed in real time (the user hears a metronome and plays beats in time with the metronome) or in step time, where the user specifies the precise moment in time on which a note will sound.
By the year 2000, standalone drum machines became much less common, being partly supplanted by general-purpose hardware samplers controlled by sequencers (built-in or external), software-based sequencing and sampling and the use of loops, and music workstations with integrated sequencing and drum sounds.

Shavano Music Online - Programmable Drum Machine/Sequences; General Information
If you are new to programming a pattern based drum machine (or drum sequences in general) and not a drummer, odds are pretty good that you will lean towards turning the music into noise rather than enhancing it.
Some Drum machines work differently than the Roland models (The Alesis SR 16 works very differently, but can still use these sequences), as do Software Sequencer programs that can be used to loop a few measures.
Some MIDI Drum machines support a full range of MIDI Velocities (volume level at which an individual note is played), others simply understand a limited range of velocities and handle them as they see fit.

Of the many aliases attributed to Orlando, FL-based artist Travis Stewart (aka Syndrone, tstewart) Machine Drum is handily the most well-known.
Although initially conceived as an outlet for Stewart's drill'n'bass meanderings, Machine Drum's first public release was a hazy, skittering melange that owed more to hip-hop and ambient than early Squarepusher.
Indeed, the bursting "Izey Rael" would prove to be the template for Machine Drum's ensuing long-player.
