Drum roll - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A drum roll is a method a percussionist employs to produce a sustained sound on a drum.
Rolls are used on other percussion instruments as well, such as the marimba and xylophone to sustain the sound, where it can be likened to tremolo on string instruments.
The open roll (or "double-stroke roll") is played with double strokes alternating between the left and right hands; the closed roll or multiple-bounce roll is produced by applying slightly more pressure to the fulcrum upon impact which allows for the stick to bounce many times on the drum head.

There isn't a right or wrong drum roll, it just depends on what sound you want and what the musical setting is. They are different because they have a different sound and use a different technique to make the sound.
The closed roll is sometimes referred to as the "buzz" roll or the "pressed" roll.
Each strike of the drum on an open roll is usually written as demi-semi-quavers (see the NoteValuesChart on the Notation page), which means that your wrist actions (hand movements) are moving at the speed of semi-quavers (because you get two hits of the drum for each wrist action on an open roll).

 Percussion: Rolling Along
Single stroke rolls are most commonly used on timpani, keyboard mallet percussion instruments and percussion instruments which are difficult to produce a rebound with a stick or mallet.
Single stroke rolls do not produce a smooth uniform sound and multiple bounces are physically too strenuous and do not produce the necessary volume. The double stroke roll developed in military drumming when drums were used extensively as signal instruments, and it was necessary to produce a long, loud roll.
A closed roll generally produces the smoothest long tone, and for this reason is the most common type of drum roll to hear in concert (orchestral) style music.

 Drum-Solo
This is particularly effective when done to a drum roll or when the drum is so fast, you couldn't possibly hit each beat.
If you choose not to choreograph your drum solo--and to be honest, while I usually choreograph my other dances, I really enjoy the spontaneity of improvising to drums-try planning out a couple of dynamic combinations for particularly noticeable parts of the drum solo.
A hypnotic, trance-like drum solo should be approached with a completely different attitude and energy, but attitude and energy need to be there regardless of the mood of the piece.

On a drum staff (a staff set to channel 10) put a base clef and use the note just below the first ledger under the clef (it would be a D).
Many people also use two different pitches, say a B and a C for a rolling B. I avoid this because it sounds like an out-of-tune timpani to me. I also use a sustain pedal (yes, as is used for piano parts) to help achieve a more realistic sound.
Where there is a roll followed by a rest, or at the end of a piece, you may also have to replace the repeated notes with one or more rests so that the timp.

MMD Archives: Orchestrion Snare Drum Mechanisms
Another comment one might make in regard to dual beater snare drums is the fact that there are really a lot of snare effects that orches- trions cannot take advantage of unless they have one reiterating beater and one single stroke beater.
The most important effect that comes to mind are the accents during the execution of a drum roll.
The "O" roll snare drum can also be given a wide latitude of expression because of its dual beater system, and nothing is better than snare expression when it comes to really squeezing out rhythm.

 NWCForum - Drum Roll
If you cannot imagine what an authentic drum roll sounds like, in terms of note duration and velocity (or, loudness), try this: Find a drum roll that you like, as an audio file (wav or mp3 or whatever).
Varying velocity is only one issue...there is also the fact that rapidly succeeding notes in a drum roll favor the attack over the sustain.
The result is a loss of the sort of 'mush' that accompanies a natural drum roll...all you hear are attacks and no warmth...changing velocities and durations etc doesn't change the way the attack always overrides the susatain of the previous note.........
