The parts of the drum stick are the butt, the grip area, the shoulder, the neck, and the tip.

The shoulder is the area of the stick just behind the tip and is the part that most drummers use to hit cymbal crashes, rim shots, and soulful backbeats.
Sticks with shorter, thicker tapers feel stiffer, offer greater durability and produce a stronger sound than sticks with longer, narrower tapers which tend to be fragile and flex easily but whose sound is more delicate.

If one of your sticks is not rebounding to the exact height as the other stick then your energy is off balance and your spending more energy in one hand than the other.
Controlling the rebound of the stick such that it bounces straight up the path in which it came down is one of the control skills that these masters have.
Therefore if your sticks are bouncing in different places every time you come down with the stick then you are not only having to move the stick up and down, but you are also moving the stick to the the left and right.

There is also an excessive release of energy from the stick because when the tip hits the head it wants to bounce up and when the middle of the stick hits the rim it wants to bounce up.
