The Gore Booths have lived near Drumcliffe since the time of Elizabeth I and the present house, built by Sir Robert Gore Booth in 1830s is still their home.
Lisadell is a fine but austere example of Greek Revival architecture and as a lot of the house was last refurbished 100 years ago visitors can expect an atmosphere of faded grandeur.

St Columba's church was built in 1809 using stones from the old monastery, and parts of a Celtic High Cross have apparently been found in the walls.
A nice touch in this building which is steeped in history, is a noticeboard situated in a corner at the back of the church which is covered with samples of gaudily coloured children's artwork, praising God in its own, very modern, way.
Indeed, Yeat's great grandfather, John Yeats, was rector at Drumcliffe in the early 19th century.

These lines are from a poem attribuated to St.Columcille (or St.Columba as he is also known) the founder of the monastry at Drumcliffe.
He was born in Donegal, a member of a royal family, studied at bardic and monastic schools and after his ordination travelled Ireland and founded several monastic settlements, including Derry, near his own birthplace Durrow and Kells.
He visited Clonmacnois and so on his journey up the west coast to Sligo he founded the monastic settlement at Drumcliffe not far from the scene of the fateful battle.

It is in the porch of the Drumcliffe Church of Ireland church that we find the headstone to Thomas Soden, 1594-1700 that was originally in the church at Moneygold to the north.

Lissadell House is the large and austere Grecian revival home of the Gore-Both family, beautifully situated amidst woods and glades on the North shore of Sligo Bay and immortalised by William Butler Yeats in his poem "In Memory of Eva Gore Booth and Con Markievicz".

Drumcliffe is the site of a monastic settlement, and also the burial place of the famous Irish poet W.B. Yeats.Its importance dates from 574AD when St Colmcille (also called Columba) founded a monastery here.

The next morning, we took a taxi the short way to Drumcliffe and were the first ones in the churchyard.
It wasn't the bones I came for, but the surround, the feeling of the place that influenced Yeats's poetry, and inspired him to imagine himself at rest here in what I consider to be his greatest poem.
The low clouds and inclement weather, though certainly not the whole Drumcliffe story, are nevertheless a good share of it.

Transcribing of the 1901 Census for Drumcliff Parish of County Sligo has been a collaborative effort over a number of months.
Charlie started it after working with Ann Marie Patterson on the similar job for Kilgeever Parish in County Mayo, and, frankly, because an ancestor of his came from the Drumcliff area.
Because "more data is better", we have included the LDS film number and the Census number, so researchers will be able to pinpoint the film and page of their ancestor's place in the Census.

After stopping at a bakery for a lunch of fresh bread and pastries filled with unequaled Irish cream, we set out on the N15 towards Drumcliffe, eager to leave the congestion of the town.
Nearing the edge of town we asked directions from a man walking along the road, but he was not sure which road would take us to Donegal, never having been that far himself.
Shortly after leaving Sligo, we stopped at the Drumcliffe churchyard to see the grave of W.B. Yeats, surely a modest resting place for such a great writer.
