Sound simulation of drumhead   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
The drumhead is made of a stretched circular membrane and set into vibration by the impact of a drumstick.
The fact is that striking a drumhead at any given point excites each natural mode in proportion to how much that mode involves motion of that particular point.
For instance, the first mode of a drumhead is most efficient excited by striking it in center and as you strike closer and closer to the edge, you will get vibrations involving smaller and smaller proportions of that mode.

Drumhead - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A drumhead is a membrane stretched over one or both of the open ends of a drum.
The drumhead is struck with sticks, mallets, or hands so that it vibrates and the sound resonates through the drum.
These plastic drumheads are cheaper, more durable, and less sensitive to weather than animal skin heads, so they are used by a great majority of drummers.

Drum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Drums consist of at least one membrane, called a drumhead or drumskin, that is stretched over a shell and struck, either directly with parts of a player's body, or with some sort of implement such as a drumstick, to produce sound.
The shell almost invariably has a circular opening over which the drumhead is stretched, but the shape of the remainder of the shell varies widely.
The sound of a drum depends on several variables including shell shape, size, thickness of shell, materials of the shell, type of drumhead, tension of the drumhead, position of the drum, location, and how it is struck.

 Drum Tuning Tips
One particular characteristic of plastic drumheads though, was that they originally had a very "glassy" tone with more high overtones and a longer sustain which some drummers preferred, some hated, and others were willing "to put up with" just to be rid of the effects that weather/humidity had on natural skin heads.
With the drumhead under enough tension that there are no wrinkles, it "sings a note" and the area at each tension rod has close to the same pitch when tapped, it is time to "seat" the drumhead.
Your goal is to simultaneously "clear" the drumhead as you raise it's overall pitch to the range you desire it to be in.

 Vibrations of cosmic drumhead
If you sprinkle fine sand uniformly over a drumhead and then make it vibrate, the grains of sand will collect in characteristic spots and figures, called Chladni patterns.
In particular, the distribution of spots depends not only on the way the drum vibrated initially but also on the global shape of the drum, because the waves will be reflected differently according to whether the edge of the drumhead is a circle, an ellipse, a square, or some other shape.
More precisely, density fluctuations may be expressed as combinations of the vibrational modes of space, just as the vibration of a drumhead may be expressed as a combination of the drumhead's harmonics.

Drumhead's disc may have fancy- pants packaging and they may be using a computer, but there's no getting away from the fact that, at heart, it's a hippie-ass bongo circle.
It sounds better than it really is. While it's an interesting setup, too often Drumhead doesn't make it into orbit, the victim of dull, go- nowhere meanderings that never really take hold.
Like the bongo circle, which can be fun for the first few minutes, the outfit pounds out an interesting beat by being too repetitive and too minimalist for its own good.

The radially extending tendril-like arms, and die-cut holes of the Batter Badge allow it to flex with the drumhead it is placed upon, preserving the "sweet spot" where it is struck by the drummer.
Drummers can play without worry of denting drumheads, and can place a Batter Badge exactly where the most strikes are made, really letting a drummer customize the drumhead for each drum's "strike zone".
Drumheads with "dots" made of the same material as the drumhead, dent relatively easily.

Bush Picks Six for Drumhead Trials, Possible Execution   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
President Bush last week selected six out of an estimated 680 detainees held at the Guantanamo Bay naval base for possible trials before a secret military tribunal that could end in the defendants’ execution.
Meanwhile, there have been numerous indications that the drumhead justice being prepared at Guantanamo will be the model for Washington’s treatment of those accused of resisting US military occupation in Iraq, where the number of detainees now numbers in the thousands.
While the Pentagon has insisted that it has no plans to ship any of its Iraqi prisoners to Guantanamo, it has deemed those who fought US forces—outside of the regular uniformed Iraqi army—to be "unlawful combatants," just like the alleged Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters jailed in Cuba.

I've seen the phrase "drumhead justice" a few times recently and wondered both what it means and what it implies.
I found an alternate definition of drumhead meaning "carried out swiftly or summarily", but I've seen drumhead justice used more often seeming to imply lack of a coherent larger plan than swiftness.
I would interpret drumhead justice to characterize a lynch mob mentality or a sort of trial by headlines.
