  Closeburn Castle and Drumlanrig Castle
The Kirkpatrick family who inhabited Closeburn Castle have their own specially symbol of misfortune: that of a swan with a bloody breast, relating to an old family story.
Many years ago two swans used to visit the castle, and at least twice their appearance heralded the miraculous recovery for ill members of the family.
The castle also has a story about a murder victim whose blood can not be washed from the floor of one of the passageways, a common folklore motif.

The castle was constructed in the 13th century and belonged to the Crighton family from the 14th century, eventually being abandoned to the elements in the late 17th century.
In 1875 the skeleton of a girl was found in the castle facing down in a pit, attracting rumours that this was the body of Marion.
Another skeleton is alleged to have been discovered at the castle: that of a headless man under the castle vaults during the first half of the 19th century.

The castle is not posted as dangerous, as are many of the privately owned (or non-Historic Scotland) castles, but it doesn't look very stable to me. Mark, of course, scrambled up into the ruined tower despite the gaps in the stone and precarious stairs.
The four storey ashlar-faced tower is all that remains of the original structure, although it was probably intended to be one of four towers in the couryard by 1380.
Two ghosts reputedly haunt the castle -- one is a "White lady", a spirit of a young woman, Marion of Dalpeddar, who disappeared in 1580 and may have been murdered by one of the Crichton lords.

Dalkeith House was built on to an earlier castle by the architect James Smith in 1710 at the behest of Anne Duchess of Buccleuch, widow of the ill-fated Duke of Monmouth.
The Castle was built by William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry, on to a much earlier Castle, between 1679 and 1691.
In 1810, the 3rd Duke of Buccleuch inherited Drumlanrig through his grandmother, Lady Jane Douglas, daughter of the 2nd Duke of Queensberrry, who married Francis, 2nd Duke of Buccleuch, thereby uniting the families of Montagu, Douglas and Scott.
