William Drummond of Hawthornden was born on 13 December, 1585.
In the year 1610, when William Drummond was twenty-five years of age, his father died, and the only reason for the continuance of his studies in law was, by this event, removed.
Drummond is a link, as it were, between Spenser’s great conception of Beauty, as the informing spirit of life, and Shelley’s greater application of that idea to human affairs.

Drummond received his early education at the high school of Edinburgh, and graduated in July 1605 as M.A. of the recently founded University of Edinburgh.
Drummond spent two years at Bourges and Paris in the study of law; and, in 1609, he was again in Scotland, where, by the death of his father in the following year, he became laird of Hawthornden at the early age of twenty-four.
Drummond was called "the Scottish Petrarch"; and his sonnets, which are the expression of a genuine passion, stand far above most of the contemporary Petrarcan imitations.

He spent over a year there, and the best-remembered hospitality which he enjoyed was that of the Scottish poet, Drummond of Hawthornden.
Drummond undertook to record as much of Jonson's conversation as he could in his diary, and thus preserved for us aspects of Jonson's personality that would otherwise have been lost.
In the postscript added by Drummond, he is described as "a great lover and praiser of himself, a contemner and scorner of others".

Poet, born at Hawthornden, near Edinburgh, EC Scotland, UK.
He studied law at Bourges and Paris, then became laird of Hawthornden, where he devoted his life to poetry, writing many for Mary Cunningham of Barns, who died on the eve of their marriage (1615), and mechanical experiments.
He was the first Scottish poet to write in a form of English not from Scotland.

With these two Scotsmen, Alexander and Drummond, may be classed Sidney’s friend, Fulke Greville, afterwards lord Brooke, who wrote (but did not publish) at the end of the sixteenth century a miscellaneous collection of poems called Caelica.
