  Drunken Angel Review
Drunken Angel (1948) was Kurosawa’s seventh film (he started in 1943 with Sanshiro Sugata) and by all accounts his first major work.
Overall, though, Drunken Angel is a dynamic examination of a postwar Japan in physical and psychic chaos, and a typically strong look at the forces that bind men, and sometimes destroy them.
Drunken Angel is a transitional film for Japanese cinema and especially for Kurosawa; it offers a vivid glimpse of postwar life (both rotten and restoring), and signals the full blossoming of Kurosawa's talent.

Drunken Angel marked the first time that Japanese director Akira Kurosawa directed masterful actor Toshiro Mifune, but the results are excellent enough that you can see why their collaborations continued for decades.
Drunken Angel opens, Mifune’s young thug stumbles into the doctor’s office late one night with an injured hand that he claims he hurt by slamming it in a door.

Drunken Angel is a case in point: whilst it may share a lachrymose coda with Rhapsody in August (or, indeed, Rashomon), its bitter edge is present from the opening titles.
In this respect Drunken Angel can be twinned with Stray Dog (made the following year) as any film in which Kurosawa considers the characters of modern day Japan also hinges on a taking of the post-war mood.
As for extras, Drunken Angel comes with the BFI's standard Kurosawa accompaniment: a handful of biographies on the disc for the director and his two leads, plus a booklet of reprinted Sight and Sound articles and Philip Kemp’s liner notes in the case.

The collapse of the "warrior nation" after the war is painfully evident in the film’s central image, a filthy, disease-breeding cesspool outside the doctor’s office and through which the characters constantly must pass in rituals of moral pollution.
Indeed, Drunken Angel throughout has the squalid look of a neo-realist film, complete with slum streets and gangsters and party girls trying desperately to survive in a rank, unlivable world.
In Drunken Angel it was shown as a constant threat.

Drunken Angel (Yoidore Tenshi) Film Review - Time Out Film
Kurosawa quotes this, his seventh feature, an atmospheric noir-inflected low life melodrama, as the first in which he felt truly himself as director.
Casting the moody 28-year-old Mifune, in the first of their 16 collaborations, as the violent gangster whom boozy doctor Shimura diagnoses as suffering from TB ('a hole in the heart,' says the sour 'angel', ruefully), entailed major rewrites as his part was gradually increased.
The movie breathes the polluted air of post-war pessimism, dissipation and poetic fatalism, symbolised in the shots of the oily, malaria-ridden swamp of a Tokyo dockside, but it is dramatically qualified by Mifune's suggested redeemability and Shimura's stoical humanism, the quality he epitomised almost 20 years later in the marvellous Redbeard.

Set in postwar Japan, specifically in a city slum frequented by yakuza hoodlums and gaudy good-time girls, Drunken Angel sees Mifune star as Matsunaga, a young gangster who reluctantly seeks treatment from the local doctor, Dr Sanada, played by Shimura.

The yakuza, the squalor of poverty, and the glimpses of a brighter future, as seen in the schoolgirl demeanour of Sanada's other young TB patient and the healthy bustle of the merchant district, provide what seems a clear snapshot of post-war Tokyo's first steps toward self-redefinition.

The war had ruined the nation, and Kurosawa spoke through film as an artist addressing this devastation and seeking a path beyond it.

As he would do again in IKIRU and RED BEARD, Kurosawa uses illness as a social metaphor.

As a result, Kurosawa’s 1947 One Wonderful Sunday is perhaps his weakest film, an innocuous and sentimental story of a young couple who are too poor to get married.
The mature Kurosawa appeared in the 1948 Drunken Angel.
Here he displays not only a full command of fl-and-white filmmaking technique with his characteristic variety of pacing, lighting, and camera angles for maximum editorial effect, but his first use of soundimage counterpoints in the ‘‘Cuckoo Waltz’’ scene, where lively music contrasts with the dying gangster’s dark mood.
