Although the theatre survived the Great Fire of London, which raged through the city in September 1666 (and probably hastened the end of the plague), it was to burn down six years later on 25 January 1672.
Management of the theatre after it reopened in 1813 fell to Samuel Arnold, overseen by an amateur board of directors and a subcommittee focusing on the theatre as a centre for national culture.
The theatre reopened with Noel Coward's Pacific 1860 in 1946.

The theatre struggled against stronger competition for a few years and was even forced to close, but in 1682 the Drury Lane company and their rivals joined forces under the management of Thomas Betterton.
After a few successful years the theatre again found itself in difficulty and it was not until the famous actor David Garrick took over the management in 1747 that the theatre’s fortunes began to rise.

This, I must admit, is principally due to Nathan Lane who brings a breath of Broadway chutzpah to the show and lifts it from the commonplace into the sublime.
A plot which goes sadly awry when the show becomes a smash hit and the two are sent to jail where they attempt to produce a show with the other inmates which, in its turn, when they are released becomes a hit and sets them on the road to honest fame and fortune.
One can only hope that Nathan Lane can be persuaded to remain on as, (no disrespect to Lee Evans), it is hard to see whether without him the show would have the same zest and sparkle it has today.
