Drury - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Drury surname is French in origin, and is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word "druid." The druids were a priestly class in Celtic and Gaulish societies at the time of the Roman Empire.
The Drurys of Suffolk were a prominent knightly family in medieval days with a total of eighteen Knights, five of whom were Sheriffs of Norfolk and Suffolk, and four Knights of the Shire.
Four Drurys, Sir Robert Drury of Rougham (died 1626), Sir Henry Drury of Hedgerley (died 1617), Sir Anthony Drury of Besthorpre (died 1638) and Sir Dru Drury of Rollesby (died 1626), were knighted in the Royal Garden at Whitehall on July 23, 1603 before the coronation of James I.

Drury understood perhaps as well as anyone in his time that executive power was corrupting, in the manner Lord Acton said it was.
Drury understood that good, or better, men are formed on the anvil of moral ambiguity — rather than in the certitudes (selfish or ideological) of demagogy.
Drury’s treatment of the racial issue had nothing of the depth of Faulkner or Ellison, that is true; but he understood the issue, in political terms, in policy terms, and even — though he did not have the art to render it as they did — in psychological terms.

Of Drury's projects at Montalvo, the most ambitious is an installation in the redwood groves above the complex called "Redwood Vortex." With the help of assistants, Drury created a spiraling vortex of willow branches that surrounds one of the area's towering redwoods, reaching more than 60-feet above the ground.
Drury decided on the spiral form in order to express the flow of sap, which follows a corkscrew movement up the tree's trunk.
Drury reused the cardiac twist in a floor piece called "Sequoia Whirlpool" in which sequoia sticks are arranged in a double vortex pattern around a stone, again emphasizing the commonality of the form in both the human body and the natural landscape.

POLITICS-U.S.: Strong Must Rule the Weak, said Neo-Cons' Muse
In his article, Hersh wrote that Strauss believed the world to be a place where ''isolated liberal democracies live in constant danger from hostile elements abroad'', and where policy advisers may have to deceive their own publics and even their rulers in order to protect their countries.
For Strauss, ''religion is the glue that holds society together'', said Drury, who added that Irving Kristol, among other neo-conservatives, has argued that separating church and state was the biggest mistake made by the founders of the U.S. republic.
Drury suggests it is ironic, but not inconsistent with Strauss' ideas about the necessity for elites to deceive their citizens, that the Bush administration defends its anti-terrorist campaign by resorting to idealistic rhetoric.
