Dry Deck Shelter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Dry Deck Shelter (DDS) is a removable module that can be attached to a submarine to allow divers easy exit and entrance while the boat is submerged.
They have three HY-80 steel sections within the outer glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) fairing: a spherical hyperbaric chamber at the forward end to treat injured divers, a smaller spherical transfer trunk, and a cylindrical hangar with elliptical ends to house a Swimmer Delivery Vehicle (SDV) or 20 SEALs with four Combat Rubber Raiding Craft (CRRC).
In early 2004, six portable Dry Deck Shelters were in use by the USN, all built by the Electric Boat Company.

The dry deck shelter has three interconnecting compartments (which can be pressurized to at least 130 feet), and is constructed of the same HY-80 steel that most modern us submarine hulls are composed of.
The Dry Deck Shelters are expected to be serviceable for 40 years, which will allow them to function until the extinction of their associated submarine class.

Any US submarine can be employed to carry SEALs, however, the Navy has several submarines that have been specially modified to carry swimmers and their equipment more effectively, including the installation of chambers called Dry Deck Shelters (DDSs) to house Swimmer Delivery Vehicles (SDVs).
With an expected service life of at least 40 years, Dry Deck Shelters will likely continue to support the missions of Seal Delivery Vehicle deployment and Mass Swimmer Lock-Out, serving both the Special Operations Forces and submarine warfare specialties for many years to come.
