The valley floors are covered with a loose gravelly material, in which ice-wedge polygons may be observed.
Scientists consider the Dry Valleys perhaps the closest of any terrestrial environment to Mars, and thus an important source of insights into possible extraterrestrial life.

Quivira Vineyards - Dry Creek Valley - Sonoma County   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Native Americans occupied the Dry Creek Valley for at least 5000 years living in what must have been an extraordinary paradise replete with ample food sources (there is no word in the Pomo language for famine or extreme hunger) and no apparent sign of human conflict or danger.
It comprised 17,000 acres encompassing most of the Dry Creek Valley and was granted in 1843 to the fourteen year old son of a Sergeant Major in the Spanish Colonial Militia named Jose German Pina.
Then as now, Dry Creek Valley was synonymous with good Zinfandel, and Quivira continues to honor the rich history and tradition of its many generations of predecessors by growing and making wine that truly represents a "Taste of Place".

Of the estimated 6,000 acres of grapevines planted in the Dry Creek Valley appellation, it is estimated that no more than 15% of that acreage is planted to Zinfandel, and of that amount, pre-WWII old vine plantings are less than 200 acres.
Nearly all of the viticultural development is along a deeply cut river valley that runs parallel to the Alexander Valley, but is not nearly as subject to the Pacific Ocean breezes that cool that broad valley in the early afternoon.
Dry Creek's daytime temperatures can often climb to over 100 degrees, and its most renowned section of land for Zinfandel is an area known as the "eastern bench," where the vines bake in the summer heat.
