  dry cell
Dry cell (plural dry cells) noun part of a battery:  a current-generating electric cell that cannot be regenerated and contains an electrolyte in the form of a paste or within a porous material to keep it from spilling.
The functional elements of a dry cell battery are the negative terminal (a zinc can which encloses the battery materials), the positive terminal (the carbon rod and carbon and manganese dioxide mixture that surrounds the rod), and an electrolyte paste between the two terminals.
Other types of dry cell batteries are the silver battery in which silver metal serves as an inert cathode to support the reduction of silver oxide (Ag2O) and the oxidation of zinc (anode) in a basic medium.

The entire outside case of a dry cell is the negatively charged electrode, which is composed of zinc.
The positive electrode in a dry cell is a carbon rod.
When the positive and negative terminals of the dry cell are connected by means of the wire, electrons move through the wire from the negative terminal to the positive terminal.

 Hope-Jones and the Dry Cell
Dry cells had only recently appeared at the time Hope-Jones was beginning his career as an organ builder.
The dry cell was invented by Carl Gassner and became available commercially in 1888, only a year before Hope-Jones resigned as a telephone engineer to become a full time organ builder.
The association of dry cells with Hope-Jones is so strong that one is entitled at least to examine his motives and integrity when, as a professional engineer, he must have known that they were the worst possible way to go.

Dry cell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A dry cell is a galvanic electrochemical cell with a pasty electrolyte.
A common dry cell is the zinc-carbon battery sometimes called the dry Leclanché cell, with a nominal voltage of 1.5 volts, the same nominal voltage as the alkaline battery.
Multiple cells are commonly connected in series within a single case or battery compartment within a device to form a dry battery (or dry cell battery) of greater voltage than is provided by one cell.

 The Columbia Dry Cell Battery
NCC was the first company to successfully manufacture and distribute sealed dry cell batteries on a large scale.
Previous dry cell iterations, such as the Gassner version, had used plaster of Paris which left only a small space for the cathode.
The technology of the Columbia, a carbon-zinc battery using an acidic electrolyte, served as the basis of all dry cell batteries for the next sixty years, until the introduction of the alkaline battery by the Eveready Battery Company (now Energizer) in the late 1950s.

 dry cells
Dry cell sizes were first designated by single letters.
Battery capacity is rated in ampere-hours, but manufacturers don't usually provide such an estimate because the amount of current that can be drawn from a dry cell depends on such factors as the weather, the age of the cell, the cut-off voltage, the size of the load, and how quickly the power is withdrawn.
For example, a C cell made for clocks is optimized for a much lower current draw but a much longer life than a C cell made for flashlights.

 The Columbia Dry Cell Battery
The development of a reliable sealed dry cell was critical to the production of cars.
Batteries were used as the "igniter" in early autos much as spark plugs are used in modern internal combustion engines: an early patent says that "gasolene [sic] or other vapor-operated automobiles employ a sparking device for igniting the vapor at each alternate stroke of the engine-piston.
The device in common use consists of a plurality of dry batteries…" The emergence of the magneto in 1907 and then the invention in 1911 of the electric starter, powered by a rechargeable storage battery, eventually made dry cells unnecessary for this purpose.

Zinc-carbon battery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The cathode is a mixture of manganese dioxide and carbon powder.
A Zinc-carbon dry cell is described as a primary cell because as the cell is discharged, it is not intended to be recharged and must be discarded.
The container of the dry cell, which also serves as one of the electrodes, is made of zinc.

The anode became the zinc can containing the cell, and the electrolyte became a paste rather than a liquid--basically the zinc carbon cell that is known today.
This dry cell is a very common general purpose, battery.
The cells are very cheap, bobbin format and, correspondingly, their performance is generally poorer than other systems at high currents, especially at low temperatures.
