In dry docking, a ship is removed from the water to enable work to be performed on the exterior part of the ship below the waterline.
To prepare the dry dock, keel blocks are set into position and lines and men to handle the vessel are readied.
Injuries, fatalities associated with overturning ship during dry docking and launching operations - catastrophic accidents are unlikely, provided that appropriate procedures are followed.

  Dry dock Information
A graving dry dock is a narrow basin, usually made of earthen berms and concrete, closed by gates or by a caisson, in which a vessel may be floated and the water pumped out, leaving the vessel supported on blocks.
The first dry dock in Europe, and the oldest surviving dry dock, was commissioned by Henry VII of England at HMNB Portsmouth in 1495 (see The Tudors and the Royal Navy).
The largest dry dock in the world is in Belfast, Northern Ireland measuring 556m by 93m, with a capacity of 1.2million tonnes.

One dry dock (that at Sprakers) was found not to have a basin at all but was instead, apparently, a level area along the canal onto which boats were pulled by way of a ramp or other such device up on to dry ground so that the boat could be repaired.
The Chittenango Landing dry dock, which is being reconstructed for the museum, is built on very level ground and thus it was necessary for the owners to run an open ditch, 15 feet deep, nearly 2,000 feet to the nearby creek but this situation and a few others are rare exceptions.
Docking price seems to have had nothing to do with the amount of work done or the time for which the bay was occupied, as the most expensive job seen, costing $1,333.62, was only charged $3.00 for docking.

Off the island of Guam, we find a floating dry-dock.
I’d assumed the cargo was craned into the dry dock, but instead the dry dock slightly submerges itself (just like a submarine) so that the ship (or in this case, a real submarine) can drive into the u-shape of the dry dock.
The dry dock then pumps out the water to raise itself and the cargo above the surface.
