Dry river beds are a great way to make the permanent drainage swails on your property both functional and interesting, from a landscaping perspective.
To create a basic dry riverbed, I begin by reshaping the swail to ensure that it is deep enough (between eight and 12 inches) and wide enough to handle water flow at max capacity -- in a downpour thunderstorm, for example.
One point of note is that you should avoid (if possible) creating a dry riverbed that is a straight line.
