The Sixties were a rich period with Hibernian reaching the semi-finals of the Fairs Cup (UEFA) in 1961 before losing to Roma in a third match play-off in the Olympic Stadium.
European football returned but Hibs were thwarted in their 1992 UEFA Cup campaign by Anderlecht, the Belgian champions, losing on the away goal rule (2-2, 1-1).
Hibs also signed a European Cup Winner, Frenchman Franck Sauzee, that season and Hibs were soon to become a force to be reckoned with.

  Drybrough Cup
The Drybrough Cup was a football competition held between Scottish clubs from 1971 to 1980.
It was similar to the Watney Cup in England which commenced the previous year.
The entrants were the eight teams which scored the most league goals in the preceding season with the four clubs from the top division being seeded to avoid each other in the first round.

The Dons had heartbreak in both Cup competitions, losing to Dundee United in the League Cup final replay 3-0 and 1-0 to Rangers in the Scottish Cup semi–final the same season but soon the Pittodrie fans would have very good reason to celebrate.
Aberdeen had a poor start to the season but this was not a sprint, it was a marathon, and the Dons would go on a late 15-match undefeated run from March to May with two wins in Glasgow against Celtic on their relentless march towards the title.
The only cup competition left for the Dons to focus on was the Scottish Cup and they were given a tough task with an away draw at Fir Park to play Motherwell.

The Drybrough Cup was played six times in all - 1971-72, 72-73, 73-74, 74-75, 79-80 and 80-81 and was one of the Scottish game's more obscure tournaments.
As a result those companies prepared to put some money into the game had to set up their own tournaments, of which the Drybrough Cup was one - the first sponsored competition exclusive to Scottish clubs.
But the Drybrough Cup made a brief comeback at the end of the decade.

Sir Alex Ferguson was a highly successful manager of the team in the 1980s, guiding them to three league championships, and famously to victory in the 1983 Cup Winners' Cup, defeating Real Madrid in the final.
The Scottish League Championship was claimed in 1954-55 as the club emerged as a credible threat to the Old Firm dominance of Scottish football.
Alex Smith and Jocky Scott formed a co-managership of the club to replace Porterfield, and achieved a great Cup double in 1989-90 as they started to repair the damage done by the previous manager.
