 [No title]
John Dryden (1631-1700) English poet, born on or about the 8th of August 1631, at Aidwinkle, in Northamptonshire was of Cumberland stock, though his family had been settled for three generations in Northamptonshire, had acquired estates and a baronetcy, and intermarried with landed families in that county.
Dryden chooses, as it were, a fragment of a historical action, a single moment during which motives play within a narrow circle, the culminating point in the relations between his two personages.
Dryden took the field as a satirist towards the close of 1681, on the side of the court, at the moment when Shaftesbury, baffled in his efforts to exclude the duke of York from the throne as a papist, and secure the succession of the duke of Monmouth, was waiting his trial for high treason.

Island of Freedom - John Dryden
Dryden was born to a Puritan family in Aldwinkle, Northamptonshire, and was educated at Westminster School and at the University of Cambridge.
In 1699 Dryden wrote the last of his published works, metrical paraphrases of Homer, the Latin poet Ovid, the Italian poet Giovanni Boccaccio, and the English poet Geoffrey Chaucer, under the title Fables Ancient and Modern; its preface is one of his most important essays.
Dryden is, however, still best known for his poetry, which Samuel Johnson compared metaphorically to the accomplishments of Rome under the emperor Augustus, when Horace, Ovid, and Virgil flourished.

This morning, I found a useful blog entry over at Living in Dryden about the bureaucratic difficulties involved in erecting a tower to harness wind energy on private land.
It seems that the Town of Dryden, in Tompkins County, has no suitable legislation to regulate alternative energy sources, and so a couple there is having to wait at the very least a half a year to erect a wind turbine that they’ve already paid for.
Let this be a warning to all: Before you go and invest in alternative energy technology, go to your town or village board and investigate the legal framework for doing so.
