  Oils - LoveToKnow 1911
The property of oils and fats of being readily hydrolysed is a most important one, and very extensive use of it is made in the arts (soapmaking, candle-making and recovery of their by-products).
Oils so obtained are known in commerce as "cold drawn oils," "cold pressed oils," "salad oils," "virgin oils." By pressing in the cold, obviously only part of the oil or fat is recovered.
The oil retained traces of sulphur, which showed themselves disagreeably in the smell of soaps made from it, and in the flening of substances with which it was used.

DRYING OILS: any of a group of oily, organic liquids that, when applied as a thin coating, absorb atmospheric oxygen and polymerize, forming a tough, elastic layer.
Linseed oil was one of the very first drying oils to be used in varnishing and has become the predominant oil for paint vehicles and mediums through the ages due to its superior balance of qualities.
Oils should be cleansed and purified of their mucilage to prevent discoloration with age.

 Drying Oils
Nondrying oils are mineral oils and vegetable oils, such as peanut oil and cottonseed oil, that resemble animal fats and, because they do not oxidize naturally and harden, are unsuitable as a binder for paint.
The slow drying rate of the oils prevented their immediate acceptance, but after it was discovered that the addition of zinc and lead to the oil reduced the drying time, painting with oil became widespread.
Drying oil is both the binder and the vehicle for the pigments that are used in oil painting.

 Hort 403 - Oils
If the oil is high in glycerides of the unsaturated type, particularly linoleic and linolenic with little oleic and lauric, the oil is said to be a drying oil (capable of forming an elastic film upon absorption of oxygen from the air).
Copra oil, from the coconut, is of course a kernel oil, being derived from the endosperm of the coconut seed.
The oil is not edible because of its laxative effect, and it is used mainly in the manufacture of paints, linoleum, water-proofing, and printers ink.

Second, oils are used as a medium to modify paints, either by themselves or mixed with turpentine or resin.
Semi-drying oils are often used to slow down the fast drying times of some pigments and can be used either by themselves or mixed with a drying oil.
This is called "drying linseed oil" and is good to speed drying in the early stages of a painting (and it dries darker than plain linseed oil).

THE DRYING OF OILS AND OIL PAINT
Oil films used as coatings on painting or furniture should dry quickly to avoid picking up dust which would change the optical properties of the coating.
The oils themselves are slow in drying but the addition of pigments may speed up or in some rare cases even slow down the drying of the mix of oil and pigment (paint).
Beyond drying to the touch, paints are still very active chemically and the polymerization process that starts with the uptake of oxygen will still be active for years afterward, and even affect the physical properties of paint decades after the paint film was applied.

Fats and Oils - Chapter 1
Fats and oils, then, in the restricted meaning in which these two words are used hereafter, are substances which consist always of chemical combinations of glycerin with certain fatty acids, and which may serve as foods.
Drying oils absorb oxygen from the air and are thereby converted into plastic, elastic, resin-like substances.
Between the drying oils and the non-drying oils is a group of oils which, while they possess the property of absorbing oxygen, do not do so sufficiently to qualify them as drying oils.

In general, drying oils (linseed and wood (tung) are the most widely used oils in this industry, although the semi-drying oils (eg safflower-, sunflower- and soyabean oil) may also be used in certain applications.
In addition to our range of drying oils we supply a range of specially developed oils ideal for use in the surface coating industry, eg dehydrated castor oil, plastybcol, synthol, enamel oils and emulsifiable oils.
As well as enhancing drying properties, vegetable oils incorporated into surface coatings add gloss, durability, water resistance and flexibility to the final coat, and make the physical application of the coating easier (its "brushability") and also help to increase the solids content of the product by replacing potentially hazardous solvents.

Drying Oils can be defined as liquid vegetable oils that, (applied in thin layers to a non-absorbent substrate), will dry in the air to form a solid film.
The principal drying component in Tung oil is eleostearic acid, a conjugated octadecatrienoic acid.

Vegatable oils - Plants For A Future
Vegetable oil has a wide range of uses, and whilst many of these involve processes that are too technical for small scale ventures, there are still many ways in which we can employ them - as a food for example, or as a lubricant, a fuel for paraffin lamps and as a wood preservative.
Oils are often divided into three categories according to their qualities, these categories are non-drying, semi- drying and drying.
Drying oils, on the other hand, are quite quick to oxidise and become solid, thus they are often used in paints and varnishes - Linseed oil is a good example of this.
