  Dual Layer DVD Mediia Introduction
Dual layer recordable discs contain two organic dye recording layers (termed L0 and L1, respectively) between dual polycarbonate bases and semi-reflective metal layers separated by a transparent spacing layer.
Reflectivity of both recording layers of a dual layer recordable disc is the similar: greater than 18 percent.
The reflectivity between the L0 and L1 layers, however, is greater than 50 percent because the upper (second) recording layer absorbs and reflects some of energy that is directed at the lower (first) recording layer L0 in order for organic dye to be recorded.

Erasable optical data storage medium - Patent 4719615   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
The dual layer is susceptible to expansion and contraction, to writing data thermally, to erasing data thermally and mechanically, and to reading data optically, the first material and the second material, respectively, being bonded together and remaining in the same physical state upon the expansion and relaxation of the dual layer.
One type of optical recording that has the highest potential is an optical recording apparatus or system which uses, in lieu of the magnetic recording head, a highly focused laser beam as an ultra-fine recording stylus to write and read data at a very high data rate and recording density, and to erase the data.
The bottom layer of material is a relatively inextensible metal or polymer having a high coefficient of thermal expansion, and the top layer is a metal alloy which is in a martensitic phase at ambient temperature and has a low coefficient of thermal expansion.

Since dual layer technology has always been part of the DVD qualifications, dual layer recording on the desktop is the natural progression of single layer 4.7GB recordable technology.
Dual layer proficient recorders will have the capability to record on the new dual layer DVD recordable discs, and same with conventional single layer DVD discs and CDs also.
It is on the primary recordable layer where the entire “table of contents” and system region of a dual layer recordable disc are stored.

The duel of the dual-layer DVD formats - Internet - News - ZDNet Asia
Dual-layer DVD recorders slated for PC use are expected to emerge by spring, with dual-layer recorders targeted at the consumer electronics market available later in the year, according to Hans Driessen, global communications manager for Philips' Optical Storage division.
Arranging for both layers to be recorded in equal amounts is relatively easy in the case of data files of a known size, Driessen said.
When a user records a television broadcast of unknown length, however, the drive may need to add "dummy" data in order for the disc to be readable in DVD players.

Set-top video recorders have a lot more to deal with because they are creating an application layer in real time, as opposed to computer-based tools that may do this sequentially over a more extended time.

 Dual Layer DVD Recording
Certainly business users will appreciate the increased storage capacity of a dual layer DVD recordable disc when distributing a large amount of data on a single disc is needed, and even for desktop system backup and single server backup with time and cost savings over traditional tape technologies.
Because double layer recordable discs are basically one contiguous stream of block addresses, it’s not very difficult for software makers to make their disc mastering software compatible with dual layer drives and media, as least where recording data is concerned.
This “layer jump” is typically not visible when you watch a DVD movie even though there is a very brief interruption to allow the player to focus on the second layer.

The manual says that once the first layer is recorded you cannot continue the recording on the second layer unless you close the first layer.
Since recording on a disc is not a question of the speed of the disc spinning then it would also stand to reason that SP/LP/EP modes would mean lowering the bitrate to get more recording material on the same amount of disc space.

Sony DRU-700A Dual-Layer DVD Burner: The 50 Percent Solution
Dual layer disks consist of two layers of dye substrate separated by a semi-transparent metal layer.
Burning the lower layer is performed by refocusing the laser beam so that it passes through the first layer, through the partially reflective metal layer, and down to the lower dye layer.
When the upper layer needs to be written, the laser is then focused on that layer, and the metal layer serves to block whatever excess energy might exist.
