MIT License - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The MIT License, also called the X License or the X11 License, originated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is a license for the use of certain types of computer software.
The MIT License is most similar to the 3-clause BSD license, which is essentially different only in the fact that it contains a notice prohibiting the use of the name of the copyright holder in promotion.
A 2-clause BSD-style license, found in software such as Apple Computer's WebCore (though most of WebCore is under the LGPL) is, in practicality, the same as the MIT License, as it does not contain the "promotion" clause.

Artistic License - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Artistic License is a software license used for certain free software packages, most notably the standard Perl implementation, most of CPAN modules and Parrot, which are dual-licensed under the Artistic License and the GNU General Public License (GPL).
There exists an Artistic License 2.0, which was written in response to a Perl community request for comments, which everyone agrees is a free software license.
The license was written by Bradley Kuhn, then working for Free Software Foundation, and seems to be scheduled for adoption by the standard Perl implementation when version 6 is released.

MySQL AB :: The Rhyme and Reason of Dual Licensing
Dual licensing lets companies provide warranted commercial software licenses to their customers, while at the same time offering their software under an open source license to all who wish to use, modify and distribute it freely.
Our dual licensing is an open scheme where you, the user or customer, is in the driver's seat.
You decide which license is best for you, and you are free to switch from one to the other and to mix the two models.

Technology News: Commentary : Dual Licensing: Having Your Cake and Eating It Too
A more accurate definition is that dual licensing is simply the licensing of one software product under two different licenses, where one license allows for free distribution and the other allows for license revenues.
The first prerequisite of dual licensing is that the licensor needs to have control over all the copyrights or at least enough control to be able to pick the license terms.
advocates, the dual licensing model is just a way for commercial companies to reap the fruits of open sourcing without sharing the benefits.

 Wikitravel talk:Dual licensing - Wikitravel
You'll also find that the licenses don't prevent you from using your fair use rights or any other rights you may have to make use of the works, even though those uses are distribution and display not in accordance with the license.
I'm confused not by the licensing, but what the actual point of contention here is. It's clear, and I think the article states fairly clearly, that the original copyright holder has full control over their work and can license it multiple ways in any way they wish.
Licenses do not allow you to make dual-licensed derivative works, because that is a right you already have, and a license cannot take that right away from you.

Guide to the CC dual-license - Meta
This is a short guide to contributions which are dual-licensed under the GFDL and the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license (henceforth CC).
The GFDL is very similar to the CC license; however, the CC license is very attractive because it is very clearly and simply explained.
This is not strictly true; I license all of my contributions perfectly freely, but the copyright ownership does not change.

Is Dual Licensing Evil? | Linux Gazette
Dual licensing is basically the result of someone applies the traditional commercial software business model, along with its assumptions and expectations, to open software software.
The recent licensing fiascos of Mambo and XFree86 are good examples of why monolithic control (aka the cathedral development model) sometimes result in stricter licensing and eventually fail, and these aren't even dual licensed, they're pure open source projects.
Dual licensing implies a level of monolithic control that will exist for as long as the project is being dual-licensed.

To enable collaboration between contributors, and to keep their contributions free for everyone to use, Wikitravel content is released under a copyleft license called the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 1.0 License (sometimes called the by-sa license).
Dual licensing allows material to be shared between projects, that use different incompatible licenses.
The major problem with dual licensing is that it's confusing for readers, re-distributors, and other contributors.

I received permission to relicense changes under dual GPL/BSD license and consequently, I believe that all parts of hostapd are now covered by this dual license.
Other options are considered on case by case basis, but I'm likely to require a license that is compatible with both GPL and BSD for contributions to core code in hostapd and wpa_supplicant.
Prefered license for them is also dual GPL/BSD, but I'm more willing to use other licenses to make it easier to integrate interface code from external sources into my CVS tree.

 Perl6's License Should be (GPL|Artistic-2.0) -
In addition, this RFC proposes that the license of Perl6 be the disjunction of the GNU General Public License and the Artistic License, Version 2.0.
This license tries to fit the spirit of the original Artistic License, while keeping the text of the license clear, and legally sound, and address the issues set forth in RFC211.
This license is bound by copyright law, and thus it legally applies only to works which the copyright holder has permitted copying, distribution or modification under the terms of the Artistic License, Version 2.0.

Trolltech's dual licensing model is based on the principle of fair exchange: Users who want to donate their source code to the Open Source community can use the Open Source version and must license their software under the GPL.
Dual-licensed software is sold under a commercial license for proprietary development in a commercial context and is also released under the GPL for open source development projects.
"Dual licensing is a win-win for all, as technology vendors can purchase and license commercially-supported software that has been tested and proven by a huge open source community," said Mårten Mickos, CEO at MySQL AB.

Licensing questions can submitted online for our advice, and we encourage you to refer to the Free Software Foundation or a lawyer as appropriate.
For OEM's, ISVs, corporate, and government users, a commercial license is the proper solution because it provides you with assurance from the vendor and releases you from the strict requirements of the GPL license.
We also have created a license exception which enables Free and Open Source software ("FLOSS") to be able to include the GPL-licensed MySQL client libraries despite the fact that not all open source licenses are compatible with the GPL.

In essence, the dual license equates to a money-back guarantee, delivering a large advantage over highly supervised trial licensing practices.
Rather than putting the open source vendor in competition with in-house development projects, the dual license provides a natural segue to a commercial license and cross-selling of support and services.

OpenOffice.org Forum at OOoForum.org :: View topic - question about the logistics of dual licensing   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
I'm uncomfortable with this because the proprietary licenses will be negotiated on a per customer basis and it is impractical to put the license terms in the source code.
I suppose my question is basically whether a dual license (where one license choice is the GPL) requires the rest of the Program to be similarly dual-licensed.
The FSF might see the source and due to lack of any notice of the possibility of dual license have been confused about the status of foo.c, but this is nothing more than a simple misunderstanding, easily cleared up.

 Mozilla Relicensing FAQ
Some existing Mozilla source files are licensed under licenses based on the (modified) BSD license, the MIT license, or similar licenses; examples of such source files include the JPEG library code.
As previously discussed, in cases where Mozilla source files are currently distributed under the MPL (or a dual license based on the MPL), if those files contain contributed code not copyright by Netscape then we must seek and obtain the permission of the copyright holders for that code in order to change the licensing.
The terms of the hypothetical MPL/LGPL dual license permit this alteration, but it would be inconvenient for the developer in our example to do this, especially if the Mozilla code in question consisted not of a single source file but rather of tens, hundreds, or even thousands of source files.

GetWiki uses a "split" license, where part of the code and the images are not released under the GPL, but under the CCL.
The case with GetWiki is not different in principle, but due to its lack of centrality or influence, a dual license would not prevent commercial usurpation, and the GPL used alone would encourage it.
Therefore, the split licensing of GetWiki may break spirit with the GPL, but it is not meant to prevent otherwise open source applications or derivative works - it is not a patent.
