DualDisc titles received a mass rollout to retailers throughout the United States in February, 2005, though some titles were available as early as November, 2004.
DualDiscs appear to be based on double-sided DVD technology such as DVD-10, DVD-14 and DVD-18 except that DualDisc technology replaces one of the DVD sides with a CD.
DualDiscs take the approach of using a double-sided disc to provide the necessary backwards compatibility; hybrid SACDs are a one-sided solution that instead use two layers: a conventional CD layer and a high-resolution layer.

Review of the new Sony release "Back in Black" DualDisc which was initially released in 2004 in the test markets of Boston and Seattle.
Also, and this is nitpicking, but I noticed that the printing of the booklet has been moved just a tiny bit, moved up maybe a quarter of an inch.
The DualDisc is clearly marked on both sides and looks pretty cool for the minimal amount of printing they could do, since, of course, both sides are pressed with information.

For anyone who isn't aware of DualDisc, it is a new hacked-together "format" that features a double-sided disc with a DVD on one side and CD-like audio on the other side.
DualDisc doesn't offer anything that releasing a two-disc CD and DVD package doesn't, and, from what I've read, actually costs more to manufacture than those two-disc sets to begin with.
The concept of a DualDisc is genius, because now the listener can have the PCM mix on one side and the 5.1 mix on the other side.

Now, the flipside to this is that dualdisc doesnt work in some CD players due to its thickness, but this is probably the minority.
It's funny but in every single review of a DualDisc I've read it is mentioned that the reviewer could not get their CD players to recognize the CD side.
At least with dualdisc you can rip the CD side (assuming you have a CD-ROM) and play the DVD-A side as you would a normal DVD-A. I use a plextor plexwriter premium and it rips the CD side great.
