The Body: State Senator Tom Duane
Duane is a strong proponent of a civil rights bill to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals against discrimination in employment, housing, criminal justice, and healthcare.
In Duane's vision, public money would be better spent on education, both in the public schools and in expanded services at CUNY and SUNY, New York's city and state universities; on real investment in the arts; on services for the state's young people; and on other programs aimed at improving the lives of New Yorkers.
Duane was officially sworn in to his new office, along with the rest of the state legislature, on January 6 in Albany.

Duane, who faced substantial criticism in January for questioning the presence of Albany Bishop Howard Hubbard in the Senate chamber, said about 15 alleged victims of clergy molestation intend to accompany him at a news conference today.
Duane said he has both anger and empathy for the abusing clergy members, because some are likely mentally ill. "However, I am extremely angry at the hierarchy who did nothing to protect children who are at risk, especially since they knew so clearly that they were putting them in danger," he said.
Duane said he is motivated by the stories of several people who claim to have been abused in the Capital Region by priests during the past several decades.
