Duarte Barbosa was a Portuguese factor at Cannanore and Cochin in between 1503 and (about) 1517 and had left behind an interesting account on trade and political events of the southeast including Bengal.
Duarte Barbosa's uncle, Goncalo Gil Barbosa, had gone to India in 1503 with the fleet of Pedro Alvarez Cabral; and was left at Cochin as a factor.
From the published letter of Duarte, then writer at Cannanore, written on 12 January 1513 to the King of Portugal, it is clear that he did not get the coveted post of head writer and that the people of the country were up in arms against the Governor Diogo Correa.

BANGLAPEDIA: Barbosa, Duarte    (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Barbosa was one of the earliest to describe the trade between India and West Asia as well as the method by which the Portuguese managed to turn that trade to the Cape of Good Hope route, thus striking a blow against the Turkish Empire.
Barbosa's absence of reference to the Hindu merchants of Bengal seems to confirm the view that the overseas trade was totally under the Muslim merchants who possessed a number of ships.
The account of Barbosa is important not only for his observations on trade and political events during a transitional period but also for throwing up ethnological details of the times, most of which were gathered by him from other sources.

Duarte Barbosa mentions a community of Filipino merchants, workers and mercenaries at Malacca at the same time that Magellan acquired Enrique there.
After Magellan's death at Mactan, Duarte Barbosa treated Enrique harshly and then sent him on another mission to Hamubon the chief or datu of Cebu.

Among Barbosa's writings are a description of the East African coastal trading city of Mombasa, as well as the Indian practice of sati or suttee, the ritual suicide of a widow on her late husband's funeral pyre.
Barbosa's uncle Diego, warden of the castle of Seville, was Magellan's father-in-law, and Barbosa himself accompanied the explorer in his famous voyage around the world.
One of the few survivors of the Battle of Mactan in which Magellan was killed, Barbosa was made captain of the ship Victoria and the co-commander of the armada, where remained until he was killed at the Humabon feast.

Barbosa examined his wound and decided that it was not serious, so he brusquely ordered him to return to duty.
A wave of fury mounted in Barbosa, He had hated the slave in the past, for he had never forgiven nor forgotten the righteous scorn with which Enrique had looked upon him when he had twice failed in hit duty to Magellan and had had to be brought to his senses by stern punishment.
He felt a searing hatred toward Barbosa for yesterday's failure to aid Magellan in his extremity, and held both Barbosa and Serrano to be traitors and murderers in letting Magellan be overcome.

On the basis of the writings of Barbosa, Cortesao and Azevedo, Professor Donald F. Lach summarises the situation thus: “Moors from all over the Islamic world congregate in the cities of Gujarat to carry on trade or to find employment as soldiers of the sultan.
Such was their strength and influence that, although the ruler of Quilon and his armed retainers were always close by the city, the real arbiters of justice in local affairs seemed to be the wealthy “Moors” who ran the fishery.
When Barbosa visited Bengal at the beginning of the sixteenth century, he found the inhabitants of the interior Gentiles, subject to the king of Bengal who was a Moor, while the sea ports were inhabited by both Moors and Gentiles.

Although Barbosa did not provide a ‘systematic’ account, the elements of caste he identified remain central to any definition of caste, even today.
The idea of pollution which Barbosa saw in the context of untouchability was now generalised for the whole system in which the idea of ritual purity and impurity of statuses was considered the central principle governing the caste-system.
In the event, Barbosa’s empirical view of caste was now superimposed by the scriptural (ideological) varna view of caste.
