Lobo, who should not be confused with his Portuguese namesake and near-contemporary Duarte Lôbo, is perhaps best known now for his consummate motet Versa est in luctum, recorded here, though in his lifetime he was respected as the equal of the great Victoria himself.
Lobo's style was never purely madrigalian, but a halfway point between it and the calm order of strictly imitative counterpoint.
Lobo's Ave Maria is a masterpiece of a rather different kind from the other motets, being based on a complex canon 8 in 4 at the upper fifth.

He was born in Lisbon, and studied music in Évora as a youth.
His students included some of the most famous Portuguese composers of the early 17th century, such as Duarte Lobo, Manuel Cardoso, Filipe de Magalhães and Manuel Rebelo.

Duarte was at the forefront of polyphony with an unsurpassed contrapuntal facility.

The Grey Shadow » Duarte Lôbo: Requiem
While editing the church bulletin, I put in the CD player the wonderful Requiem Mass by the Portuguese composer Duarte Lôbo (c.1565-1646; a namesake of mine, since his name was latinized as Eduardus Lupus).
Duarte Lôbo was one of the most prolific Portuguese composers at a time when Portugual was politically dependent on the Kingdom of Spain, and therefore his music shows a lot of Spanish influence, especially from Victoria.
The music is, of course, a Mass that you were supposed to sing in order to pray for the dead, and while there are many Bible verses that speak of hope and comfort, there are many unbiblical prayers and sayings proper to Roman Catholicism.

All these Portuguese settings are stylistically on the cusp between a genuinely polyphonic renaissance idiom and something based more in harmonic movement, reflecting baroque thought.
The aesthetic result is that the music conveys the same certainty of purpose and the same spirit of repose, never explicitly sad but encouraging the listener to contemplate something infinite, beyond human reasoning.
Duarte Lôbo (whose name was Latinised as Eduardus Lupus and should not be confused with that of his Spanish near-contemporary Alonso Lobo) was born about 1565 and died in 1646 in Lisbon.

The Tallis Scholars first brought the music of 16th-century Spanish composer Alonso Lobo to wide public attention with their recording of Victoria's Requiem: the last item on that disc was Lobo's powerful motet Versa est in luctum, written for the funeral of Philip II in 1598.
Alonso Lobo was held in the highest regard as a composer in his time - he was considered to be one of the finest composers of his time (a sentiment shared, incidentally, by fellow composer Victoria).
Alonso Lobo was the pupil of Francisco Guerrero, one of the most famous composers of the Spanish renaissance.

The Requiem has some similarities with Fauré's, though it also shows the strong influence of Gregorian chant and Renaissance music.
For example, the opening theme in Introit-Kyrie is borrowed from Duarte Lobo's Missa pro defunctis.
The piece was reworked into two other versions, and now exists in three versions—one for full orchestra, one for reduced orchestra, and a version with organ (plus an obbligato solo for cello in the "Pie Jesu").

Perhaps the most impressive performances are the thoughtful and moving accounts of Duarte Lobo’s pair of funeral motets, Audivi vocem and Pater peccavi, the choir’s sustained and beautiful tone bringing out the harmonic logic of the two pieces to perfection (losing nothing to either the William Byrd Choir or The Sixteen).
The idiosyncratic Magalhaes Mass is also superlatively sung, Ars Nova seeming to enjoy the abrupt textural contrasts in the work somewhat more than does the rather blander reading by A Capella Portuguesa.
