dub housing project feels very original in character.
it feels like a mix of idm, trip hop and dub and i would say is both its strength and weakness.
there are a lot of cool elements and effects in it, a laidback trumpet, delayed dub chords, detailed drum programming etc. i am not sure that these elements really fit together though.

As such, DUB HOUSING, 10 months its junior, was always going to have a hard act to follow.
DUB HOUSING rode along on Tony Maimone`s fluid bass work on "I Will Wait" and "Navvy," periodically breaking down into ordered chaos.
DUB HOUSING, wrapped in a dark and uninviting sleeve, is named after the ambience of terraced homes in Baltimore.

Dub was then such an intriguing abstract concept, and it was hard to reconcile it with the Ubu image which was so anti-pop it was disconcerting.
Now, Dub Housing sounds terrific, and is probably the most consistent, cohesive Ubu record.
They were always slightly defiantly rooted in the Beefheart and orthodox r'n'b, but on Dub Housing this takes more of a garage twist and it's possible to see how they could have influenced the emerging UK explorers like The Fall, Pop Group, Josef K, by fusing the experimental with the finest fundamentals of pop.

Releasing an album seething with deformed musical ideas like Dub Housing in 1978 was to set yourself up for financial failure and virtual obscurity, of course.
There are some discernible pop undercurrents on Dub Housing that don't hook you instantly-- rather, they tend to slowly unravel and reveal themselves with a little persistent listening.
And in today's disturbingly conservative times, Dub Housing still manages to stand out like a singular musical oddity in a rock and roll universe where base conventionality and bland stereotypes still captivate mass audiences everywhere.

Dub Housing, the second album by Pere Ubu, has the effect of an extremely stimulating dream: images and emotions emerge from cacophonous songs only to disappear just as quickly, never to be found again in subsequent listenings.
In any given Pere Ubu composition, cracked and mostly incoherent phrases are wailed in a high monotone by lead singer David Thomas, while a wooden riff is systematically splintered by the guitars and keyboards.
Instead of sounding like a mess, however, Dub Housing coheres as a lyrical work devoid of the sentimentalism that so many lyrical works drown in.

Weird, wonderful and so far beyond the expected that these deconstructions of popular music [Dub Housing and New Picnic Time] are as charmingly retro as the Beatles and as modern as today's blendings of funk, hip-hop and alt-rock.

A few aspects of King Tubby have remained integral to the dub genre: the bass and drums are mixed high in the mix; the melodies are mixed in spordically.

The differences with Dub Housing are not that strong.
Compared to Dub Housing there seems to be even a bit more experimentation here and more of a variety in moods.
On Dub Housing there were some danceable pieces even (although strange ones), but that has gone on this album making it a more definite statement than the previous.

Everything on Flip Your Wig is cleaner and brighter than on its two immediate predecessors, which is appropriate, considering that Bob Mould and Grant Hart have only increased their debt to '60s pop.
Which means Hart's love song "Green Eyes" and Mould's pure pop single "Makes No Sense at All" are delivered with the same rage and passion as Mould's blistering "Divide and Conquer" and Hart's "Keep Hanging On," or the pair of surging, neo-psychedelic and noise-wracked instrumentals tha more...

Dub Housing may be the better effort (New Picnic Time is just a bit too loose and unstructured), but both are strangely beautiful and melodic despite, and often because of, Ubu's typical penchant for experimenting.

The Modern Dance and Dub Housing (both 1978), and the earlier recordings collected on 1985's Terminal Tower, constitute the eeriest and most musically adventurous of all late-'70s American punk.
From the early singles through The Modern Dance, Pere Ubu's music -- Allen Ravenstein's uncanny, keening synth notwithstanding -- was recognizably in the pre-punk anti-tradition of the Stooges and the Velvet Underground; on the amazing Dub Housing the song structures disintegrated and Thomas's vocal performance at times resembled speaking in tongues more than ordinary language.
Somehow it still sounded like rock and roll -- unlike the band's subsequent records of the early 1980s, where Thomas followed his muse into found-object experiments, the Jehovah's Witnesses, and baby talk.

The group's first album, The Modern Dance, sold only 15,000 copies initially but it was a startling work that influenced an entire generation of bands.
Its follow-up, Dub Housing, was the masterpiece, "an incomparable work of American genius." Pere Ubu toured Europe extensively in 1978.
Late in 1979 Tom Herman left and was replaced by Mayo Thompson, the guitarist from 60's Texas psychedelic-rock legends The Red Crayola.

Side two collects the kind of oddments that rarely cohere on LP, yet here the outtakes and B sides and stray singles come together as a record of David Thomas's slide or progress from willed optimism to blessed whimsy.

Though perhaps not as spastic as earlier works from the Pere Ubu catalog, St Arkansas sounds like the Pere Ubu that made the band so important.
Sure, the album may not be as "artsy and abstract but still rocking and listenable" as The Modern Dance and Dub Housing, but it makes a worthwhile twelfth album.

The bizarro party vibe that permeated their early classic material is long gone.
The earliest incarnation of Pere Ubu (late 70's/early 80's) produced some incredible albums ("The Modern Dance", "Dub Housing") but also a few so-so efforts, and this reminds me of the more lackluster albums from that period.
In 1995 they turned away from pop with the brilliant "Ray Gun Suitcase", which called to mind the classic "Dub Housing" album from 1979.

Thomas is certainly bouncing off the walls, along with the rest of his merry band.
Evidently they must have thought, in a fit of crazed hindsight, that 1978's innovative (and sufficiently weird) Dub Housing sounded too poppy.
And although the critical establishment is notorious for letting both bone- numbing minimalist repetition and rampant, rudderless insanity undeservedly pass for unquestionable brilliance, I do honestly think some of New Picnic Time makes for some riveting listening.
